Rusted rims on the Raleigh 3 speed. New wheels? Safe to re-use?

I was working on the rusted rim from the Raleigh 3 speed. After I removed the tire, the tube and the rim tape, I saw 4-6 small rusted holes (perforated). Is it still safe to re-use these wheels?

If need replacement, do I need to stick with the 26 x 1 3/8 size of wheel?

If I were you, I'd replace them. You can stick with 26X1-3/8 and can go with either steel or alloy. You can also go with 700c and probably wouldn't have to use different brakes or fenders if you kept them under 32c width.

Personally, I'd keep the hubs and go with alloy 26X1-3/8 rims sporting Panaracer Col de la Vie tires.

Definitely replace them. CR18's work dandy. Lighter and better stopping. And no rust!

Less expensive alloy or steel wheel sets are sold by an ebay seller "uglyrim" I have bought 3 sets of wheels from him and have been very satisfied.

I am searching for CR18 and found Niagara Cycle (via Amazon) sells them for $72 each, ouch! Time to check out your ebayer. Thanks!

Btw, ebayer "UGLYRIM"? Are their wheels solid?

David Newton: I can't find the "UGLYRIM" ebayer with the eBay seller search?

Hold on, I found this one via Amazon. Is this even a good deal for CR18 - 36H?

That's just Niagara Cycle. I'm guessing the $72 item you found is actually a wheel, not just the rim.

THe rims will, but you don't need the entire wheelset. Harris cyclery and others have alloy and steel rims you can buy online and have local people build them up with your hubs (or you can ship hubs to them and they'll build the wheels for you).

I buy my CR-18 rims from Longleaf Bicycles out of Wilmington, NC. The high polish CR-18's look great on a Raleigh Sports. I believe the CR-18 is a even swap for the Westrick style rims, so you could reuse the spokes if they aren't bad. FWIW I prefer to lace up with nice new shiny spokes.

I just got a pair of cr18 rims from internet seller 'ebikestop.com' for $25.50 each. I got a few other items that I needed as well to bump my total up to 'fre shpping' territory, It all arrived in two days.

If they are rusted through then replace them, realise that a wheel that is 26x1 3/8 and a wheel that is 26x1.375 are different diameters, so you need to find a rim that is the right diameter. One word of warning, you can find rims and wheels in the US that are dirt cheap, but shipping to Canada can cost a fortune due to the size of the package, you also need to see which shipper they are using, as some couriers use brokers that can charge more in customs fees then the item costs. However if they use the post office, Canada Post charges a flat customs fee on pickup and it's something like $5 + HST..... Don't know if you have many domestic options on that size though. Maybe post on the Eastern Canada forum that your looking for these rims, and see if anyone has a pair in decent condition.

Not a bad idea. Some of the nipples may be frozen up anyway, so you might have to cut some of the spokes.

Do you have pictures of your current rims? I'm curious what these holes look like.

FWIW, I bought Sun CR-18 rims to replace dented/pitted rims on my Raleighs. I bought them from Alfred E. Bike. Sun makes a 32, 36, and 40 spoke version of this rim in the 590 size. You can reuse your old spokes, tape the new rim to the old, and simply transfer the spokes over, one by one.

The spacing of both front and rear hubs won't work out of the box for your Superbe: both will be too wide. Plus, that's a rear hub that takes a gear cluster.

Will shop around my LBSs to see if they have rim for 26 x 1 3/8. Frankly I doubt they do nor cheaper than online. Probably my last stop will be purchasing them from Niagara Cycle.

You can go with 700C or 650B. My Raleigh Superbe was converted to run on 700C wheels. It takes 32c tires.

You'd have to go with drum brakes if you're changing to 700C. With 650B the difference is only about 3" so you can keep the existing brakeset.

I'd get a modern IGH for greater versatility. I have had a Shimano Nexus 7 speed IGH on my Raleigh Superbe for the past decade and its just as good as the old SA 3 speed IGH it replaced.
