The hard line for me is collecting just to let rot. I really try not to leave bikes out side.
When I moved camp south, I was not prepared for the change of environment, and Watched in horror as the woodwork rotted off a couple of canoe's. Small craft are a lot like bikes, in that they have negative value to most people, thus people will start giving them to you. Of course fiberglass handles neglected a lot beter than wood or steel.

years (and years) ago I spotted a Stingray Apple Crate in a neighborhood near my parents
bike was sitting in the driveway in front of the garage alongside a few other bikes
stopped by to inquire about the bike - owner not interested in selling (not at all)
year or so later (can't recall exactly) drive by the house - bikes are still sitting outside including the Stingray - all rusted

I have more bikes than my wife would like, but definitely not as many that I'd be considered a hoarder. Most of them, for better or worse, are hanging from the ceiling of my garage, so they aren't really "in the way", so there's that.
My biggest issue is that I went though a period where I was wrenching on them regularly, tweaking and cleaning and lubing, while now I mostly ignore them. And even riding has become less and less. But I know something will kick start my enthusiasm again, it always seems to. And maybe next year I will complete the few project bikes I have. And then it will be time to decide which ones to sell off. I guess I'm reaching that stage and that age where I need to be realistic, and bikes that I simply don't have time for will have to be purged.

just last year I gave one bike that sat for 20+ years some TLC and rode it a number of times late last summer through the fall
recently acquired parts for a bare frame that's been sitting since the late 90's - hope to bring it back to life soon and be riding it this coming year

better picture of the Schwinn Stings ( @ Bicycle Heaven )
we had two Schwinn Stings - still have one - sold a red one similar to one in above picture
I got the red Sting from a guy I met at a flea market
he noticed me buying bmx bike stuff and asked me if I was interested in a Schwinn Sting he had ; I immediately replied yes and he said I could follow him to his house
so I thought the guy probably lived relatively close by ... nuh uh ... he lived almost 1 1/2 hours away lol

Several years ago I was looking for a specific part. I could find beat up ones, and I could find obscenely expensive ones. For a long time I searched- and I finally found a pretty clean one for a price I was willing to pay.
I mounted it, it was nice, but didn't like it as much as I would have hoped- and especially not for the time and energy I put into search and for the money.
I don't even think it was a week after I took it off and put it in a box- I saw another one on eBay and just about hit Buy It Now before coming to my senses... that ingrained instinct to chase was still on... even though I didn't want or like the prey.

All things considered, it's the best place for it, though I'm curious if it's a screen-used backup bike to the hero bike or a replica. The original was a bit rough as I recall.
The trick is to keep the ones you know you'll need for that Special Project™.

Been cleaning in the garage and found an almost complete Alivio 95 group.
a rd-6208 rear derailleur, a pair of front and rear Altus derailleurs, a Deore XT front derailleur
Deore XT rear derailleur, Deore front derailleur, an Exage 500 LX front derailleur.
Going to have to have a blowout sale here soon.

Just picked up a vintage hifi outfit. Speakers are JBL C50s. Thorens TT, McIntosh amp. My hifi setups took a massive step up with this purchase.
I also have a couple sets of KLH and a set of Advents. Something will be leaving as I have about 14 feet of new gear coming in….

Depends on who's lookin at the pile, there may not be much of a difference.
My chaos is untenable to many (including and maybe especially my wife )
I'm lucky I can handle it and I manage to come up with some ok results.
There is a method to most madness and ifin it works for you then you luck out, if not well....
