There are a lot of online clothing stores on the Internet and you can find there a large selection of winter cycling clothes but they're always so epxensive.

Looking for a recommendation for a jacket, preferably down, that comes with a 2 way zipper. Shouldn't be cycling specific because those tend to be cheaper. I like to keep my chest warm and a 2 way zip would help with that.

If you want to be warm.....wool......wool long johns wool long sleeve jersey....double knit wool sweater.....thick wool sox.....wool hat....then a windbreaker jacket and pants that will stop the wind.........those thin merino wool sweaters are the best to layer up with.....dont wear cotton anything........"there is no bad weather only bad clothes"

Why not cotton for middle layers? I have a wool shirt then another base layer shirt with long sleeves with thumb loops over that. Four cotton T shirts and a sweat shirt one top of that, then a jacket. Cotton not touching the skin seems to work, though I keep my rides under an hour or so, so not trying to absorb sweat by the gallon.

Aerotech has a decent winter jacket for $50 right now? Of course I bought it earlier in the year when it was $100.

We see a lot of ads for winter cycling clothes and we may have seen videos and photos of pros/amateurs out riding in the winter but I wonder if that gear (some expensive stuff from Castelli and other high end brands) is really good enough for the deep winters we see here in Canada and the northern US states.
Any opinions from anyone who has or knows of someone who has some of these types of winter cycling clothes?

45NRTH - Minneapolis-based company that focused purely on winter biking
Pearl Izumi - I got started with PI winter gear buy getting some stuff on deep discount and I had little faith - that first pair of winter tights are still mix after 6-8 years of riding through the worst possible conditions.
SmartWool (and Merino wool in general)
Snowboard stuff - I was involved in snowboarding as coach/competitor/parent for many years and have a bunch of stuff for winter.
This was my gear for a 90-minute -28F ride, nearly everything you see fits one of the above:

Castelli Alpha ROS.
Q36.5 Adventure winter jacket. Waterproof. Wool lined.
I tested both in temps 8 to 10C and 30 km winds.
Too warm w baselayer. Was sweating profusely.
Need to wait for colder temps.

We have Castelli Elemento Lite jackets. I don't think they are making that model any more though, they don't show up on the Castelli website.
The Elemento is very nice for 32-50F range, and the sizes seem to run a little small. Very little underlayer needed and they breath well.
