A Sunday in Hell

Watched it again last night, and it's 1976. I could have sworn I saw a 2nd Gen (slabside) SR rear derailleur in the bike "cleaning" (brushing vigorously) segment at the opener and not the 1st Gen that I would expect. Anybody know?

Diamante chainstays. Would that mean that Benotto is actually a DeRosa?

Also, didn’t realize the those were a thing in ‘76, I thought they started in the eighties.

Great film.

good memory

watched it about 1978-80 at the Pacific Film Archive (PFA) in Berkeley, California

seated in the next loge was cycling historian Andrew Ritchie, King Of The Road, Major Taylor

the slo-mo sequences of the riders going over pave are killer

after doing that course would expect them to wish to lie in featherbed for a few days without interruption...

...either that or about twelve hours in a Jacuzzi...

I watched it again a couple of weeks ago. I was trying to figure out what kind of brush was used. I'd kind of like to recreate that part of the video. Worried my wife will walk in and ask what the #@!! I'm doing.

Pretty close...

As far as I know, all the Benotto 3000 frames had diamante stays. As far as being built by DeRosa, I haven't found any concrete evidence.

I was laughing when I saw that part again (maybe a glass or 2 of Pinot helped), as I was wondering if that guy was always that industrious with his brush, or was he just putting on one hell of a show for the cameraman.

it’s a bike. An Italian bike. The size, front end geometry and bottom bracket drop will be the defining elements.

‘urban legend was the Benotto’s with the heart BB cutouts and the diamond stays were DeRosa shop built.

I am familiar with the 'urban legend'. I am not too worried about it one way or the other, and yes it has the heart cut out in the bottom bracket. Here is a pic of the non drive side before I changed the 'make your own decals' from the 90's. It's a little easier to make out the shape of the stays. I think..not certain, that the stays on the Benotto are a little more pronounced in their shape vs the diamante stays on a DeRosa.

looks of smart geometry, interesting fork crown. Even way back in the 1970’s one of the few times the shop had two 1974 Talbot’s bike shop imported DeRosas together… there were differences. So it goes.

Two variables here: (1) the presence/absence of a film crew and (2) the place of bike's rider in the team hierarchy. Moser's bike gets serious cleaning using holy water blessed by the Pope and oil processed by Benedictine monks. The lowest domestique gets a greasy rag waived in the bike's general direction just before the mechanic goes to bed but after he's had three or four glasses of grappa.
