I have one of those garage doors where you slide a lock-latch and then you try to grab onto something on the inside and manually lift it. Or I use the pedestrian door. It has a knob and a key-code.

We have a chamberlain door opener so it would be cheaper to hook it back up to the internet. Wonder if I could convince the google assistant to open/close it for me
I took it off of the internet because I wasn't convinced the internet gateway couldn't be hacked. I was worried about something like the camera hack, where they used the cameras for denial of service attacks. I feel like the possibility that someone would break in using the internet is somewhat remote.

Google assistant gets snooty when you curse at it. I decided that's because they have people listening to you more often than they will admit.

Zaskar , that is pretty cool. If I had just one bike, I'd install it. Since I ride 3-4 bikes fairly regularly, I instead just use a digital keypad mounted next to my garage door. It takes a few moments to open or close the door, but it only cost about $25.

I'll bet that thing would be nice when making a mad dash up the drive in a rainstorm. Or an impending hygiene emergency.

Same here - a few bikes in the rotation. But the new bike will definitely be the go-to for a while. It gets the opener. I suspect I'll end up with a couple of these. I have the keypad too. And yeah, the keypad is plenty easy. It's just not as fun as turning into into the driveway, into the garage, past the cars... and into the shop.

I checked, my opener will work with a maximum of 8 remotes. I think the 9th one overwrites one of the others.

I ordered one today, just to play around with the mounting system. Looking at it, (and with the help of my friend's machine shop) I think the unit mounting can be modified so that it can be removed from the bars with a 1/4 turn twist, leaving the 'end plug' mount intact (no retaping once installed). When it shows up I'll have a better idea. If it doesn't look like it will work I can always return it (pre-modified)

I came home from a ride today and my garage keypad wouldn’t work. Dead batteries. I immediately wished that I had one of these gizmos.

I LOVE the 1/4 turn mount idea. That made me think the steerer cap could be a great place for your "project" - more real estate to play with, stronger material, etc. Well, other than lots of stems no longer having traditional caps.

If it works, I may send them pictures of the modification process. I think they would sell a lot more of these if you didn't have to retape your bars to change a battery. It's as if they really didn't think this out.

Depending on how the bar is taped - the role the plug is playing - the retaping may not be necessary. All I did was pull the plug and replace it with the opener - no retaping.

BUT, the ability to quickly swap from bike to bike... yeah, they should jump on your idea. Plus, they'll sell some mounts - bonus!

This thread got me wondering if I could modify a keychain door remote to be smaller. Might be worth the $15 investment to find out.

It's only $15 for two keychain garage door openers
Just need bigger handlebars, I guess

Or, hang one from a handlebar bag like I mentioned above. You could certainly put one in a pocket instead.

ive always had a mind to hide an opener similar to a hidden key but somewhere at shoulder level so you don't have to reach down.. this is so much cooler

I don't know if a keychain opener would be able to broadcast the signal out when surrounded by alloy or carbon fiber bars. I guess one of the features of the 12 Speed Products unit is that they figured out how to boost the signal so it does.

Mine arrived today. I did some measurements on the mount, and determined that there doesn't seem to be enough material to allow a quarter turn mounting. What I did instead was to cut back my bar tape about 1.5" from the end, install the unit, add some tape over the mounting pieces, and use colored electrical tape over the whole thing. That way I can just remove the tape on the very end if I have to replace the battery in the future.

I do have to admit, it works really well.

On my bikes with bar end shifters, I start the bar tape at the bar end, then work up. I am not suggesting that you should re-wrap your bars, but if at some future date your tape needs replacing, that is an option. If you do that, it might look best if you wrap both sides the same way, even though you only have one opener on one end.

I do wrap from the bar end to the middle. I just cut away some of the tape. If (when) I have to re-wrap the bars, I'll start ahead of the mounting on that side, and then add a small bit from the bar end to match it. A small bit of tape at the seam should take care of it. That small section of bar tape would be the only part I had to unwrap if the battery needed replacing.

I got one today and either I'm an idiot (probably) or it won't work with my opener, a Genie series 1000, 3204 IntelliG. I've notified them but haven't heard back. Regardless, I got nothing.

According to my directions that came with the unit, it will work with a Genie, either 315mhz or 390mhz. It would be either 5 or 6 button presses to program after you hit the LEARN button on your garage door opener. You may want to try both to see if it works.

Yes. Tried both. Multiple times.

I also tried cloning An existing opener like one does with home link and that didn’t work, either.

I dont remember exactly the model, but the Genie I tried to "clone" another fob to didn't take because evidently the particular unit only allows "2" fobs at a time. It'd erase the two existing, program the "new" one & allow one of the old fobs to be programmed.

Worst garage opener unit to program. 1 star, do not recommend.

If your opener is from 1992 or earlier, you might have problems. My opener (not a Genie) was installed in 1992, newer remotes do not play well with it.

In my case I installed one of these:
https://www.ebay.com/itm/264276096162
That is a radio receiver that can then be wired to the electric opener using the same wires that you would use for an indoor button to tell your opener to open or close the door when a modern remote (that was paired with it) tells it to open.

My electric opener (from 1992) uses dip switches for codes, no learn button. With that extra radio receiver I could add modern remotes to my vintage electric opener. I suspect that you could do something like that with your Genie too.
