My wife wants to keep tabs
Hey everyone! My wife would like to be able to see where I am when I'm riding (only when I'm riding on her iOS device. I think she kinda wants to see that I'm still moving when I'm late. I have no cell service where I ride. Any tech that can help me?
Thanks all! Chip

Find My. Built into iOS.
I will sometimes get texts from Dear Wife if I am "resting a bit too long" at the top of a climb or "could you get...?" texts if I'm near a grocery store or food place and I have bags/baskets.
Yes, the CIA/FBI/NSA/Five Eyes/everyone else is also using it to surveill me, but that's part of my clever plan to lull them into complacency. (Hey, CIA/FBI/NSA/Five Eyes/everyone else, it's called "humor". Try it sometime.)
And if I suddenly disappear without a trace, see above.

And now that I've actually read the message correctly...
Have her get an AirTag, activate it with her iOS device, and you attach it to your bike. Done.
(With same privacy issues as noted above.)

No AirTag needs other devices to connect to..there's nothing out there. That would have been a cheap solution

With no cell service your only option is a satellite service device, Garmin InReach, etc.... Not sure they can do continuous tracking. They can receive and send text messages, so perhaps when she is in need of a location, she could text and you could send a replay, which also sends location data. This is a pay to use service, $35 mos ?, cannot recall. Does she really need this ?

unlike other trackers, an airtag will work if it's near just about any apple device that has a connection at all. if there's literally no cell service, no internet + wifi, no nothing, then it won't work. but if, let's say, you rode past a parked car and someone sitting in it DID have cell service, the location should update. similarly, if you go into a store which has wifi, and someone in there has an iPhone. or other apple device, or a cafe with wifi and wired internet (again, even without cell service.)
if the ride locations do not have some frequency of buildings with internet, cell service, public wifi, etc, then the airtag won't work and nothing except a satellite communicator will. something like a garmin inreach/inreach mini/acr bivy would work in theory. seems like overkill, depending on the level of concern.

That look like a solution Steve, $15/mo maybe just during the summer isn't bad. I ride less and closer in the winter. Her call!

Umm thanks. I see where I stand. I told her $400 and $15/mo and we could just do the subscription during the season. She said what? If you get run over you get run over

Garmin and Hammerhead devices have a Live Track function that in Garmin, uses a phone app and then cell service, on HH uses a SIM card. Both need cell service to transmit location data.

A plain GPS only receives signals from the satellites to determine location. Does not send any signal out. (That way you do not have to worry about FBI, CIA, NSA, etc.)

I'm not an apple person but I assume apple people still use Google Maps. If so, just share your location through live tracking and your avatar will pop up when she goes to google maps. It's not perfect but good enough. We use it to track our kids too.
Edit..Sorry, didn't comprehend there's no cell coverage.

It's a mildly amusing illustration of how most of us live that we assume there's cell coverage everywhere, and many of us don't even think or know that our favorite gadgets run off the cell network.
But riding in the hills where the only available coverage is satellites? That sounds like some really cool riding to me!
(Like hikers in prehistoric times -- make sure you tell your wife or park rangers where you're planning to ride before you leave!)

I think the upgraded Strava can do this. Not sure how much the subscription cost is.

SPOT is another satellite tracking service that you might look into. Little less upfront cost that Garmin inReach depending on what device and extra features you get. But still requires a subscription service.

When I had a sailboat myself and several of my other sailing friends used them. You give the people a URL link with a code and then they can see your location by going to the site with any internet browser they care to use. It worked great for us and our family and friends to see locations even when we were more than 100 miles offshore in the Atlantic.
