Groupset - what is the most important part?...

Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

A good quality chain that's also properly waxed? I wouldn't go cheap on this.

I have ridden mostly in my life on 105SC, ultegra 6500 and dura ace 7700/7800 but also campy c record. I prefer by a long mile dura ace 7700/7800 for its superb, smooth and lightning fast shifting and long term reliability. I rode on a campy ergopower record equipped bike and another time in the past on a chorus equipped bike but didn't like those, I didn't like the sram red and force groups as well. As for pedals I always liked the Looks Arc pedals, not fan of the Look Keos.

Here's some better info about actuation ratios: https://bike.bikegremlin.com/1278/bi...compatibility/

Additionally,if you use an old Dura-Ace RD with a non DA shifter, you can probably get away with it if your drivetrain is a speed less than the shifter.

cassette or chainrings. They can give you more range, or a tighter pattern which can improve your capabilities or enjoyment.
I would say it goes
1:cassette/chainrings
2:RD or FD to support the above
3: shifters
4:crankset
5: chain
If the gearing range is fine then 1 or 2 almost don't matter and 3 is the winner.
I ride mix and match setups and they work great....... on friction. Indexed and I want similar brand for RD/FD/shifter.
