Derailleur cage quesrion

First off, I feel stupid and I’m not sure how this happened. I was looking at my bike hanging in the garage and thought I had a stiff link until I realized I somehow got the chain over the guide between the pulleys. Not sure how many miles, though enough to put some decent grooves in the aluminum cage. Should I put something in the lines of JB Weld into the groves then sand flush in order to keep the structural integrity or just leave it alone?

JB Weld will be a cosmetic repair, but go for it - I would just ignore the grooves and remember to properly route the chain next time. Not really sure what this tab does anyway, apart from possibly preventing the chain from jumping around. However, in ~45 years, I've never seen any evidence that the chain ever actually comes in contact with the interior face of the tab

It is useful to place your thumb on it when rotating the RD to remove the wheel.

Cool. Sounds like a foolish mistake that is not structural and luckily will not be visible.

Yes, and it's a reasonably common one too.

Don't ask me how I know that. (smile)

Wrong tab. You'd never touch this one while removing the wheel.

Been there, done that. You aren't the only one. Just ride the bike. Check it once in a while and if it's ok then ride.
