2021 All-New Diverge Announced... 3 weeks after I bought my 2020
I can not post the announcement link since I don't have enought posts. Perhaps someone can do a search and add the link from the specialized website.
Highlights: 2021 Specialized Diverge
- Future Shock 2.0
- Upgraded Geometry including longer wheelbase and higher bottom bracket
- GRX Components
- Room for 700c tires up to 47mm
I just bought my 2020 Diverge Comp Carbon about 3 weeks ago at a pretty good discount. I am very happy w/ it but wondering if you guys think the new 2021 versions are a big upgrade....

Biggest upgrade in my mind is that the BB is a pinch higher, though still too low. The swat box is kinda nifty too, though I wonder if it would rattle.

To me, the biggest update is this. We've come full circle now. And turns out a gravel bike really is a hybrid with drop bars.
I love this bike by the way and can't wait to take it for a test ride.

one would hope that a gravel bike is a performance hybrid with drop bars and a shorter top tube.

Companies offer gravel bikes with suspension forks. Which I think is a bit much. It's pretty close to a hard tail drop bar mountain bike. But it seems to me that when mountain bikes were invented, it was to ride on gravel roads. The fact that mountain biking evolved away from that left a hole in the bicycle industry that has been filled by gravel bikes. I prefer my gravel bike to my mountain bike if I'm going on gravel roads. The mountain bike might actually be faster, because it's better on downhills. Since the time when gravel got more popular, mountain bikes have continued to evolve into more of a downhill bike, and that's a bit much for gravel. 5-6 years ago, very few CX bikes would fit anything bigger than 35mm tire. I just don't think that's big enough for the kind of stuff I want to ride on.

I'm very confused by this Diverge. My wife has had a raleigh flat bar bike for years now that's aluminum with a carbon fork and can take pretty huge tires (700x45). Even has hydro brakes and it cost me $350 bucks. Why is that Spez $2500 again? Sure it has a double and Shimano Altus but that's nothing that can't be fixed for $250 or so and can even go with the new 12sp Deore that just launched.

I'd doubt the shops will be seeing this bike anytime soon. China was shut down for a few weeks, nothing shipping.

The new model has 80mm of bb drop and is 6mm higher than previous models?
Good lord, I don't ever think of specialized and I'm never on their site, so maybe this was well known by all but me? 86mm of bb drop for a gravel bike is DEEP!
Mine is 76mm and even that is on the deepnside of things.

My bikes range from 74mm to 65mm of drop (65mm one has 27" wheels and 170 cranks). Lots of clearance. Cornering with power input gets sketchy before I drag a pedal. Bit tippy though.

So many recreational riders out there are riding hardtails or "hybrids" with crappy suspension forks on them for no good reason. It's just dead weight unless it's a decent fork (and you actually ride anything rough enough to warrant it). Many never even see dirt. I think a bike like these flatbar gravel rigs is perfect for someone like that. If the big 3 can start making affordable versions of these, and market that you don't "need" suspension, they'll sell a ton.

But affordable versions of this bike already exist: fitness bikes. There are a ton of fitness/hybrid bikes out there with a ridged fork, and some accept up to a 50mm tire and have a similar geometry. I can see Trek making a "FX Gravel" bike, or a Checkpoint FX.

Who knew that my 1990 Trek 850 was really a 'flat bar gravel bike'? Put some 650 tires on this, and it is literally the same bike.

Merida has facilities in Taiwan, China, and Germany. Maybe elsewhere too, no idea, I just know those 3 countries for sure.
Specialized bikes are made in Taiwan and China for sure. Maybe elsewhere, but again no idea since I have little interest in their products.

Don't you guys get it? This is way different than any other hybrid before, because its a FLAT BAR GRAVEL BIKE. Hybrids are for old people and novices, GRAVEL BIKES are for hip young people (millennials!) that have beards, explore, post on instagram, and wear satchels.
