Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Not happy w/ any glove!

I cannot find any cycling glove I am totaling satisfied with except for a pair of 5 year old Specialized I lost a few months ago. I am currently wearing some ERGO Airgel that on a 58 mile ride had my hands cooked to a medium well, and the high was only 87 F.
I went and tried on the Giro Monaco's but seemed the same....admitting looking for a little more or firmer padding. Tried some PI select (is the Elite any better?) not impressed. Fox the same as PI in my opinion. I think I will try the Spenco Ironman cycling gloves.....I searched but did not see much in comments on them. Anyone have a review on the Ironman gloves? Any other recomendations?

I started with PI selects and they were okay. My dad bought me a pair of PI pitards and they exceeded all expectations. A little pricey ~$35 but they are amazingly light and feel great on my hands.

Similar question as the OP -- I noticed this winter that my winter gloves have essentially no padding/gel (just an extra layer of fabric) and that my hands didn't develop the usual issues that I have with my half-finger summer gloves.

Any recommendations for gloves that don't have the extra padding/gel -- perhaps just an extra layer of leather?

The basic Castelli's are the best I've tried.

Gloves with crocheted cotton backs are the only ones I have found that do not feel hot on hot summer days. Unfortunately they do not seem too popular and choices are limited.

ive had the same issue lately. last season i was wearing a pair of craft gloves that were great. there were getting a little worn so i picked up som giro gloves to replace them earlier this spring. when it was still cool out they were great but now they are starting to cook my hands. its mostly the back that bothers me. the craft gloves just had lycra or simimlar material and kept my hands cool.

I have been using unpadded full finger gloves for a while now, I have one pair of Fox, and one pair of Mechanix gloves in rotation, the mechanix gloves also see gardening duty as well.

What are you looking for in a glove? I find PI Select to be good enough. They would be better with no padding.

Edit: Nevermind, I saw you want more padding. That's the opposite of what I look for.

I've been using Fox Tahoe gloves lately and they are pretty much just an extra layer of leather...

Before that I was using Performance Classic Gloves. Again they have almost no padding...

I have a pair of Specialized Pro gloves from a few years ago and they work great. Looks like they still make them but they slighly different from my 2007 version.

I rarely crash, yet I wear a helmet. For similar reasons I use gloves. I used to ride bare handed and bare headed, my sense of mortality has influenced me I guess, haha.

But it's a fair point.

To the OP, I'm sorry, I misread your question, you want more padding not less, my apologies.

I think this is what I'm looking for but no one around here carries them for me to try on and check to see if they are like my old gloves. I guess I can buy online and return if need....its just a pain.

Have you tried the dealer locator on the Specialized website? If you know there isn't any dealers near you then you might try calling Specialized. They could probably tell you if the new gloves are similar to ones you had in the past. The ones I have slip on and do not have a velcro adjustment across the back of the wrist. The graphics have changed but I think they are the same gloves.

I find the gel padding to just make lumps of discomfort.

I have a pair of carbon knuckled downhill gloves that are way more comfortable than my road gloves because they have no palm padding. I think I need to get some new gloves.

Yeah, that's the biggest thing about riding without gloves. I've seen guys using the side of the water bottle, but that's probably not as effective.

I like the PI Elite gel vent glove. It's a little expensive at about $35 though.

Mine are sort of like these: PI Elite Gel Vent

Has anybody mentioned that your fit may be off? If you have that much pressure on your hands you seat may be too far forward or your stem too long. Just a thought.
