A Serotta Davis Phinney frameset followed me home from the local Co-op today. I know it's damn good, but other than that I know nothing about it. Does anyone know when this was new or what group it would have come with? The brakes are Sachs, the FD is Shimano Dura Ace, but I don't know what's original and what's not.

Update: After some research I've found it's a size 58 (my size!), from 1990-1993 and the "PROFILE" and "TEAM MACK" decals were added by a localish (Springfield, IL) team that campaigned it at some point. The Sachs bits are probably original but I still can't figure out if it came with campy or shimano otherwise. Any clues?

Congrats! I had a Serotta and contacted them with the serial number and they got back to me within a few days with all the info they had on file.. here was their response email back to me:

Hi Andrew,

I don't have a ton of information, but I can help a little I think. The
fame was built 12-30-1988. It is a 56 Nova and was made for Business
Cycles (no location given). I hope this helps some. Unfortunately that
is the only information I have.

I'm sure someone will come along with more knowledge than me on this, but I seem to remember that Serotta's used be mainly sold as frame sets and built up by the shop that ordered them, so any groupset from that period would work. The Sachs group came with Huret derailleurs and I believe rebranded Modolo brakes if I recall correctly, looks like a cool find!

Thanks! Somebody's been donating loads of similar era 600/ultegra/dura ace components to the local co-op so I guess I could go that way without it looking too goofy. The paint is in rough enough shape that I'd like to have it painted. I just need to find or have made the "Serotta", "Davis Phinney Bicycles" and "Columbus SLX" decals. This is the nicest frameset I've ever owned and I'd like to really do it up right and ride the hell out of it. Any idea what spoke counts most people would have used on this back in the day?

Back in 2006 I picked up a 1995 Waterford 1200 in team Mack colors. I had it re sprayed yellow. Good luck with the new treasure.

Well - in that time frame, -- the Coors Light cycling team used all Dura Ace 8 speed 7400, unless this was prior to Coors Light

The only domestic pro team that used Sachs was LA Sheriff's IIRC

If this was a special consigned frameset run after the Coors Light days (I think that was Mr Phinney's last pro team ) -- all bets are off on a proper group from me at least

As a young club racer/Cat 3 sprint hero, -- I aspired to be like Davis - as I had a similar stocky'ish build and considered myself a "sprinter" of sorts ---- you have a real treat to build up ! Congrats !

He's still a hero to me to this day -- only now its for his fight with Parkinsons and I root for the boy every chance I get - to see Taylor get a gold in Rio would be amazing

I've started building it up and I'm kind of on the fence about paint. It will have to be done eventually (there's quite a bit of it missing and surface rust showing), but I'm going to put it off as long as I can. I went back to the co-op where I got it and picked up cable and housing, a set of 8spd Dura-ace DT levers, an NOS Shimano RD 6401, an NOS Cateye CC-6000, bar tape, and a lightly used set of 700x25 Michelin Axial Sports all for about $70. I then went and raided my Dad's parts bin (basically half his basement) for a good aluminum stem and bars, a set of Tektro aero levers, an older set of 105 hubs, a Sram 11-28 8spd cassette and an Origin8 110mm bcd crank. I'd like to use something more era appropriate for the crank and brake levers but I'm on a budget and want to be able to have a low gear as close to 1:1 as I can get. The crank's going to be 46-33. I also grabbed nice narrow set of Rigida 700c rims off ebay to start lacing up whenever they get here. Forgot to mention, I also grabbed a nice light Selle San Marco seat and SR seat post from the bin as well. I've installed everything I can. Hopefully it'll be a complete bike by September.

This isn't the way it's gonna be configured, but for now I can ride it. I picked the wheels up from my local co-op for $16 total while I'm saving up to build the wheels I want. This frame RULES! Super snappy feel. This is exactly what I was hoping to build.

Great job getting it on the road again. Most of my bikes are works in progress with either constant upgrading or trying to get them close to period correct. Ride the Serotta like you stole it and enjoy!

Nice find. I really like those early Serottas.
I had a Nova Special that was a little small for me so I sold it on (after putting thousands of miles on it).
Bike rode and handled like a dream, I really miss that bike.

Does yours have straight chainstays? Single bend or both?
will help determine the age of it.
