Replacing SRAM GX Eagle 12-speed derailleur
My kid has busted his second SRAM GX Eagle 12-speed derailleur in under a year. I don't want to buy another one.
Would it be possible to replace this with (for example) a Shimano XT long-cage derailleur, or a Box 2 "extra wide" derailleur (both can cope with 50T) and keep the SRAM 12-speed shifter? Both are rated for 11-speed, but I assume a derailleur is agnostic, as long as the chain fits.
He has a 0-50 12-speed SRAM cassette currently, and ideally we would like to get a drop-in replacement without having to change the cassette or shifter.
(This is from a Canyon Spectral 8, 2018 model).

He earns his own money, not that it is any of your business. Even though you are on my ignore list, I tried to give you the benefit of the doubt. Clearly that is a mistake.

Yeah, when I post a request for opinions in a public forum I just hate it when people offer their actual opinions. Can't respondents just tell me what I want to hear and/or some tangents all about themselves, in keeping with the traditions of this forum?

The bike has a SRAM groupset, you need to buy a SRAM RD, if you want cheaper, buy an NX (it's a little much cheaper), either way, if your running any MTB, esp with the latest 12 speed, it will cost you in broken parts, and there is little to no compatibility between brands for deraileurs now.
If you want to replace the shifter & cassette, you would need to add a rear wheel to that, as the freehubs are not compatible.

It has to be a SRAM X-actuation derailleur. The only ones that will work with the 50t cassette are the Eagle versions. The 1x Horizon derailleurs have a 42t max. As has already been stated, the NX version is slightly less than the GX.

Not all opinions are equally relevant, snowflake.

The NX derailleur is heavier because it’s made with more steel and less aluminum. Not sure if that relates to your son’s breakages. I’ve read it’s e-bike rated, this from a tandemist who was skeptical about the strength of the higher level cassette. I’d poke around a little more but I’m having a hard time with their website and my iPhone right now.

I'm no longer entirely convinced that the current one is broken, but in the case of the first one, a stick got tossed up into it, and twisted the cage, which we were never able to re-align properly. This is probably due to the softer aluminum, so a "downgrade" to NX might actually improve it (as long as the NX is otherwise as good). The tight tolerances for 12-speed magnify these issues and imperfections, and the bent (and subsequently straightened) derailleur never shifted well.

OK, that is good to know. Unless the XT swap-out experiment goes really well, that seems like the path of least expense.
