Are multi gears worth it on a cruiser?
I am now leaning towards a a firmstrong seven speed.

How important/helpful/nessesary are gears on a beach cruiser?
How much harder does this make assembly/maintenance?
Do multi speed systems wear and break more easily?

Yes it's very much worth it. It's a little more work setting up the bike in the beginning, but worth all the trouble. Maintenance is about the same. Single speed cruisers are a lot of work to ride without multiple gears.
If you don't know how to set up a new bike, It would be worth it to have it done at a bike shop.
If possible ride something similar to what you want before buying.

just pedal
gears are 100% worth it especially on something like a cruiser as it is difficult to stand and get some extra power when needed for a small climb or something...
setup is obviously a bit more difficult but once it's set and worn in (cables will stretch slightly when new) it'll rarely need anything more than a chain to lubricate.

It depends on how you ride and terrain. If you're just easy cruising the beach boardwalk, and have no intention to do anything else, then no, gears are not worth it (presuming the selected single gear is appropriate).

Sold out!? Oh no!!!!!
I far, far preffer to just cruise at a casual speed over smooth ground....
But there are (mild rolling) hills between me and everything else (the park, the river, star bucks, the store, my mom's, dairy queen, etc)
(All those things about about 1 to 5 miles away btw)

Some cruisers come with internal gear hubs. 3 speed on up to 7 speed, probably more.
You can shift to a lower gear while stopped at a red light.
Makes it pretty easy for just cruising around.
