Rim choice for " stealth" modern period-looking wheel build -what do you like?
I am going to be building some wheels on vintage hubs to replace tubulars with clincher rims for some of my bikes (or maybe a nice set or two that will "float" to fill in for the original tubulars for certain types of rides)...anyway, I'm looking for currently available modern rims that I could get in 32 hole (some of the hubs will be 36, though) that can reasonably be expected to build up to a nice, light wheel set that performs as modernly as possible but looks as close to "period" as possible. So....what's the current favorite?

open pro CD.. I love grey ano on anything mid 1980s and newer. Might not be available anymore though? ALso H+ son has some rims worth checking out.

On the other hand you can build a very nice set of wheels that are light and smooth riding with the silver polished Pacenti PL23 (box section, 430g and 23mm wide), the lightest DB spokes (Sapim Laser, DT Rev), and aluminum nipples. Put some wide open-tubulars on with latex tubes, and enjoy a very smooth and fast ride.

I like the Velo Orange Raid and H+Son TB14 for classic looking wheelsets. But, you'll likely have a hard time finding a pair of 36h in the latter.

Agree on the Mavic Open Pros.
I have just a few miles on this pair of Velo Orange PBP 36h, but then this is not exactly a performance application. May be a bit too light for your use.

The raid is 40g heavier and $8 more expensive than the H+ son. and the H+ looks better with the narrower braking track IMHO.

And the Pacenti PL23 is 60g lighter than the H+Son, but gives up double eyelets and costs a bit more. For the OPs application, I think the weight savings might be worth it. Not that the rim weight is going to make a difference in speed, but it makes the bike "feel" lighter.

If you want to get a bit more aero, how bout the A23s in silver? I built up a set around some campy hubs and love them. Probably too modern though, huh?
