It's a shame more people are keen to this...sad to see a man selling off such a nice bike.

My boyfriend just picked this up a few minutes ago:
https://boston.craigslist.org/bmw/bik/1254576669.html
Seller said he'd never gotten such a huge response to a CL ad.

[Should have put this in the 'wild & wacky' thread so if a mod can do so, thanks]
How not to sell a bike on CL:
I responded to an ad on CL for a Motobecane mixte at $90:
https://chicago.craigslist.org/chc/bik/1254648468.html
The ad has pictures but no details, and the description is vague. In fact the same guy has multiple ads (same phone #) which are the same way: everything 'works great' but no details. So I wrote with a simple request: what could he tell me about brakes, derailleurs, wheels, any label on the frame? Here's what I got back:
>>Nothing.!!! Just go to a bike shop. This is craigslist,. Like it or leave it. many other people have written about the bike, it will be gone today. I don't have the time or desire to answer your rather useless questions if you consider that you are writing about a used bike on craigslist and still you are looking for complete info as though you were buying new from a bike shop.
rather brainless and a waste of time.
take care.<<
I've bought and sold on CL and elsewhere for years, and it's completely reasonable to ask and answer basic questions. And $90 is not a giveaway price if this is a low-end 70s MB. I wonder if he even has the bikes there to look at.
Something stinks about this guy besides his attitude, and I suspect it would be bad karma to buy from him.
Added: a little more research reveals that this is 'Ross,' who frequently gets critical posts on Chicago CL from people who've checked out his bikes and found his descriptions dishonest. You can tell his listings by his phone number which starts 773 440.

I have done quite a bit of buying and selling on Chicago CL over the last year but have not had any dealings with this Ross fellow as of yet.
I am surprised by how many people do not even bother to respond to questions and inquiries about the bikes they are trying to sell. Many of the listings are vague and most of the pictures are terrible. If you read between the lines often enough you can find the one time sellers with a diamond in the rough.

Schwinn Paramount Titanium - $850 (Humboldt Park/Chicago)
Reply to: sale-8myde-1257155277@craigslist.org [Errors when replying to ads?]

Schwinn Paramount Titanium road bike, manufactured by Serotta. Matching carbon fork. Mavic Classic Pro wheels. Ultegra drive train, rear derailleur, shifter. 105 front derailleur, down tube shifter, brakes. Carbon "blade" seat post. Specialized seat. This frame is technically a 61cm frame, but it measures 58cm from the center of the bottom bracket to the center of the top tube, and 58 cm center to center on the top tube length. I am 6'4" and it fits me well. It could easily fit someone shorter with a shorter stem and seat post. It is in great shape and hasn't been ridden very much. The only flaw is a small chip in the paint on the down tube. Pedals and water bottle cages not included. Please call with questions or to see it. Thanks

about the rude CL reply....fwiw, I think it's fair game to say I don't know & don't have time to find out...I've been in that situation selling stuff..but usually at a cheap price when all i knew was that it was below market & all I wanted/needed was to see it go away....that said, there's no reason to be rude about it. On the flip side, having been buying/selling stuff on the 'net since it was first invented (no, not really, but a long time), I can assure you that some people have no problem asking a million questions, often requiring custom photography or exploration with no consideration for the fact that they're asking you to do so yourself when other buyers would just be looking for themselves in person. No problem here doing that stuff, but I do realize that the requests can come across as being pretty pushy sometimes. fwiw & no, I'm not Ross & I ain't in Chicago

"I don't know and don't have time to look" is fine. "I won't tell you and you're stupid to ask" is not, not if you actually want to sell something. The guy has multiple bikes for sale and has no problem describing how great they are, he just won't give any useful information.
He also claims (in other CL ads) to be a bike mechanic and invites you to bring your bike to him for work. I wonder how that goes? And of course if he's a mechanic he knows perfectly well what components are on the bikes. *I* could do that and I'm a complete n00b!
I really doubt that any bike flippers who post or lurk on this list would ever behave this way. Heck, you guys probably provide way TOO MUCH information when you sell a bike for $100!
I suspect there is something else up with 'Ross.' Think about why you would only post vague descriptions of bikes you had for sale, why you would try to hide details and identifying information...

probably meets you somewhere, whacks you on the head & takes the $100 or whatever you had to buy the bike.....so, I guess you could argue that in fact the details of what components are on the bike really *are* irrelevant...lol

There's a TI - Raleigh Team jersey in the BF FS forum, size 4. Looks like it's wool. If it were larger, it would be mine!
