energy drink/chocolate milk
... In the news paper today... as tested in Belgium: a group of well trained bikers were on their bikes for a good hour; after that half of them were given an energy drink - the other half had chocolate milk.
The quantity of sugar was the same... Then they had to ride/workout again. The bikers that had the chocolate milk could continue longer, had more energy left - up to 1,5 times!
(maybe sponsored ?)

The test that was done here in the states was sponsored by the Dairy Council...draw your own conclusions.

Usually I mix some fruity "cool best" with water - but I realize that real energy drinks are rather expensive - from a budget point of view it may be a good idea? Or not. Whatever -

There was a guy that I played football with in high school that would constantly drink chocolate milk and eat 'Nilla Wafers after 2-a-day and 3-a-day practices. At the time it about made me want to wretch. It turns out he was onto something. Who woulda thunk it?

There people who can do that..Chris Horner...Chad "Ochocinco'' Johnson (claims he eats at Micky D's three times a day)...Tyrell Owens...eat crappy food and excel. I'm not one of them...I've got to really watch my diet or I'll pay for it later.

Many Football teams use the chocolate (and strawberry) milk for post workouts as well.

Tests comparing chocolate milk to other "recovery" drinks have been done for years, way before the Dairy Council was ever involved.
Here's a CBS news report from 2006 with info concerning chocolate mike vs branded drinks:
https://www.cbsnews.com/stories/2006/...n1342839.shtml
The Dairy Council became involved only after the other studies continued to show a benefit and garner media play. Smart marketing on the Dairy Council's part.
Numerous sport-med journals as well as cycling publications have talked of the benefits of post ride chocolate milk for years.
The cost/benefit ratio of chocolate milk compared to "branded" recovery drinks is off the charts in favor of chocolate milk.

its got protein and sugar. so its got both long and short term energy. energy drinks only have massive amounts of sugar, not so much protein.

Chocolate milk > *
But it has to be whole chocolate milk. The lowfat versions are full of yucky things.

Energy drinks have a lot of crap in them too, beyond the sugar. You would be better off drinking the new pepsi/mt dew throwbacks with real sugar and no HFCS. Energy drinks have a lot of pure unadulterated crap in them which counteracts any benefit they give. It's hard to find any good article promoting energy drinks and lengthy exercise, pretty much everyone says stay away when using as a recovery drink.
I'm stickin' with chocolate milk, water, home made juices, gatorade etc. Or vitamin water (snapple had some good stuff though I can't find it anymore)

Mexican Coca-Cola (!Es la Cosa Verdadera!) too. Sucrose, not HFCS, the way God intended.

I like chocolate milk after a ride and at a reststop. Just have to be careful about how much you drink and how soon you ride hard, afterwards. Too much of both and you'll feel it in the stomach.

All the hype with "energy" drinks etc. are BS. For real. All the so called scientific studies that were performed on them are in small journals with almost zero impact factor (in the academic world).
Nothing wrong with good old natural milk and sugar. Worked before, works now.

On a positive note, the protein shake type drinks from odwalla and naked juice are awesome both in flavor and nutritional content (and also awesomely expensive).

+1...add a banana and it is even better (all that potassium).
I am new to road biking but a long time runner and I can attest that chocolate milk is an excellent recovery drink. My son, a high school cross country runner, agrees.

Go figure that just a good wholesome drink is better for you and helps the body more than the chemicaly pumped up and simulated flavour drinks that is pumped out along with all the rest of the crappy food that is put out there for us North Americans to eat or drink.

Can you say fat? Say it with me, fat. F-A-T. Fatty, fat, fat.
What intensity were they riding at? Under what conditions and what had they eaten 48 prior to the test and on and on...
