Do you judge people by their components (be honest)

Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

haha... I actually am the guy with tiagra.. scott cr1 comp to be exact. I have been mulling over the idea of upgrading my components, but a part of me is not quite sure if I want to upgrade for function or vanity.

Forget vanity. It's far more fun to crush souls with an entry level bike and Sora components. When you do that there's no "if I had better stuff..." thoughts - they know you beat 'em fair and square. Ride Tiagra with pride on the hammerhead group ride.

I think the level of components, probably from either Tiagra or 105 up, doesn't make a difference in an individual race or ride, if it's properly setup and adjusted, except in the highest levels of racing (in which case your frame design and skill matter the most).

Fail. Fixies with no brakes and helmets don't go together.

I'd figure he was wealthier, not necessarily any better.

I've blown by people in full cycling outfits and racing bikes when I've been on my MTB in whatever scraggy clothes I pulled on that morning. I've been overtaken by people riding things that looked like they should have fallen apart long ago.

One of the teachers at school has campy ergos. He got a little bit cooler to me. I like my sram tho.
But no, I don't judge based on components, i just see if I can see their bike long enough to see how cool it looks

No.............thats not nice to do. Arrogance comes to mind.

I ride a blend of Dura Ace/Ultegra........not for what others may perceive me as but what I perceive myself as doing with it.

Even setting the bar at Tiagra is too high.

You can crush souls with Shimano 2200 (subSora), for real.

Heck, I've had my soul crushed by a guy on an ancient looking steel bike using drop-bar shifters, some component set that was so old I couldn't even identify it, and a leather saddlebag, and I'm not considered a slow rider.

No. On group rides I barely even notice what color bike someone's riding. I do pay much attention to HOW they ride.

I definately judge people by their components, outfit or wheelset.

If somebody rides along with Di2 or DA but clearly shows to be a complete newbie by their riding style ... I don't just think "oh look there a cycling newbie how adorable" ... instead I think: "ha! what a complete tool that is"
Same goes for team colors on outfits or for deep aero wheelsets.

This also applies to cars. I often encounter people in Porsches or the likes that don't have a clue how to properly drive it ... which is a shame for the machine and makes them utter tools.

Is it that hard to grasp for you that people want to train for their TT races on their TT bikes?

Yes. I also judge them by the way they look, the way they ride, the way they talk, and by what they wear. I judge them by what they drive and where they live. I judge them by the way they eat and the way they drink. I judge them by everything they do and everything they are.

In general people just piss me off.

Are you happy now?

Yes, all the time.

I see them riding around with sora or tiagra and I'm thinking~ What a loser.

and when I see some guys on dura-ace I yell at them : POSEUR!!!

Seriously?
I don't care. I never really checked what other people components were. But from now on, chances are I will because of your stupid thread.

You know, it's really pretty funny, but everybody judges....

Most everyone judges everyone else by their clothes, their car, their house, their neighborhood, their income, their job, their spouse, their race, their ethnicity, their religion, their sex, their sexual appeal, their sexual orientation, their looks, their popularity, their personality, their character, their bikes, and their components too!

The funny part is:

All of the judges are jokers!

It's such a sad commentary for our lot, but it's oh so very true...

- Slim
