Livonia, MI to West Branch, MI?

My son and I have been talking about this for a couple years. We're going to ride from the Livonia area to the West Branch area. We'd like to do it in three days and the plan is to stay in hotels.

I'd love to hear from anyone that has experience with riding from SE MI to Northern MI. Routes, things to avoid, etc.

btw: it seems like Livonia to Lapeer, Lapeer to Bay City, Bay City to West Branch might make sense. Staying east of I-75.

I've only mapped a route. It is 180 miles up to Alger for me. I'm a lot further east but near 8mile. Estimating that the distance for you is approximately 200 miles, three days will make it an easy 66 miles a day. Did a quick eyeball of a potential route you could take. Starting around Joy rd & Merriman. What makes it difficult for you is the low traffic roads don't go straight north-south and a lot of the subdivisions don't have internal connections through them to the next northerly mile section. Another issue with avoiding major thoroughfares is the lakes area about a dozen miles into your route. Once you get north of the lakes area your trip on secondary roads should be much more pleasant ,especially on a weekday.
About a days rides north of you (55miles as the crow flies) is Columbiaville. A likely point of intersection for both of our paths.
It's easily do able .

Can you handle any gravel on the route? Or are you looking for paved only?

Detroitjim is correct on the n/s roads through subdivisions but if you want to spend a lot of time ahead on plotting a specific route you can get through Farmington Hills pretty well and up into West Bloomfield before the lakes make you a bit more bound to narrow, higher traffic roads. North of that I'm not too much help beyond recommending Strava HeatMap views.

Levan up from Plymouth (near Hines Drive) to 7 Mile and over to Gill northbound gets you into Farmington Hills pretty easily and into WB as noted above.

We're going to stick to paved as much as possible. Looking at Strava now.
