After a few days of rain, today was a beautiful day in the mid-60s in the SF Bay Area. I’m trying to make the most of my winter break, so I headed out for a nice 35-ish mile loop. Starting in Berkeley, I headed up into the hills and took the ridgeline south into Oakland before circling around Lake Merritt and the bay trail back into Berkeley. A short ride, but a lot of photos.

A chilly start but it warmed up nicely for the Le Tour De Ham Saturday Stroll today. Only 2 riders showed but we had a nice 31 mile ride in and around downtown Birmingham.

For days it has been 7-9 Bft here in The Netherlands and will continue, so no actual riding. We did ride in France last summer. In style, that is.

Needed to procure some scallops for tomorrow's Christmas dinner ... a quick ride to the pier, and then a bit of a loop ... Turned a 3 mile round trip chore into an 11 mile ride!

Cold and foggy day to start. Ride over to the trips for kids recyclery for a 50 percent sale. If anyone is looking they just got a clean pair of 84' Stumpjumpers in at the half price of $100 each.

The mark of Christmas and summer across Aotearoa New Zealand - Pōhutukawa trees in full bloom. Very hardy and can survive almost anywhere, especially on the coastline although this one is a city dweller and relatively small.

Easy half hour with a tailwind to late family lunch, and a more honest couple of hours in fading light afterwards…

I went for a Boring Boxing Day ride today with @gugie.



You might even say it was Beyond Boring.



(Boring, Oregon is a sister city of Dull, Scotland and Bland, Australia.)

We met a guy in Boring who was riding a nice Falcon-made Eddy Merckx and another guy with a custom Rivendell. I neglected to get pictures though. I guess I was too bored.

Along the way, we got a couple of nice views of Mt. Hood. It seems my phone decided to apply a water color effect to this one for some reason.

Below freezing temps in Fairplay CO for the past week or so, so just a short ride to the library on the single speed.

I did not ride today due to this massive rain storm moving up the east coast. Instead, my wife and I visited the Boyertown Museum of Historical Vehicles, a very interesting place in "our little town". Old cars, ancient cars, trucks, electric vehicles (over 100 years old), old carriage shop (complete with line shafts and belt driven machine tools), Conestoga wagon, etc. And bicycles (safety and penny farthings). A very nice way to spend some time on a cold dreary day.

Just a few photos from what was supposed to be a club ride on Christmas Eve. With a storm forecast giving heavy rain and winds up to 60mph the club WhatsApp was full of reasons not to ride the night before.

In the morning though the weather was breezy but dry, so I thought I'd get out and ride at least some of the route; it was fairly flat so I took the Carlton fixie out.

The route went out of Weston, running parallel with the coast before heading inland and onto the Somerset Levels. As I was on my own I diverted over the Shapwick Heath and Ham Wall nature reserves.

The nature reserves are right next to each other and are a testament to how nature can reclaim its own. They encompass large areas of former peat workings that were flooded after being worked out. The trail over the reserves is a former railway line, running alongside a canal. Time plus careful management has transformed a polluted industrial wasteland into a wildlife haven, with huge flocks of wildfowl, and large numbers of waders and raptors.

And on Christmas Eve I almost had the place to myself - just a couple of other cyclists and a few walkers. Unfortunately I picked up a puncture here, probably a thorn from a branch that'd come down in recent bad weather. Not a problem really, it was dry and I found a bench to stop at, changing the tube while watching the ducks on the canal beside me.

Exiting the reserves a couple of miles on quiet lanes took me into Glastonbury, before heading homeward over Godney Moor. Last time I rode around here the roads were flooded and Godney village had been cut off by the floods. No problem today, although there was still a lot of debris on the roads that had been covered by the flooding.

Just past Godney the forecast rain arrived. Not too bad, until I turned west and into the face of the forecast wind. The Somerset Levels are as flat as the name suggests, with long straight roads and very little in the way of shelter. When there's a headwind all you can do is keep going into it.

​​​​​So the second puncture of the day made a dent in my sense of humour. I managed to find a gateway to cower in while fitting my last tube and shovelling the last of my food in.

Got home over an hour behind when I expected to be in. Windswept, soaked, two tubes requiring repair. "Have you had a good ride Dad". said my daughter...

And, it was a good ride.

A friend gave me a nice, lightly-used pair of FMB clincher tires. I usually set up my race bikes with tubulars, but this was good cause to dust off the old training wheels for my old Parkpre (teenage race bike). These 26mm tires are probably too big, but I was able to find just enough clearance by removing the dropout adjustment screws & pulling the wheel all the way back. Just a short 15ish miles on the bay trail while the rain abated.

I haven’t taken many photos of this bike in a while so forgive the indulgence.
