Is there a book to fix, maintain, upgrade my road bike?
Ok so I've bad experiences with the 3 stores that hawk bikes in my area (Carrboro/Chapel Hill). So I am determined to avoid them as often as I can.
I thought a good book on fixing/repairing/maintaining a road bike would a good first step.
Is there anything out there that you would recommend (taking into account that my tech knowledge is null at this stage)?
Cheers!
My dream would be to buy my upgrades online, and install and fix my bike at home

Zinn and the Art of Roadbike Maintenance is a great starter reference to get you going. It will give you plenty of confidence in terms of what you are doing. Then www.parktool.com after that.
Go for it!

I don't know if you live near an REI store, but they offer monthly classes on bicycle maintenance. The one here in Houston has a beginner's class, and then the following week they have two consecutive evenings of more advanced bike service and repair, three hours each. I haven't been able to fit them into my schedule, but I'm hoping to take them by the end of the year. You might have to be an REI member to take the classes, but check their website for details. I joined, mainly because I thought the $15 was worth it so I wouldn't have to listen to their membership pitch everytime I bought something there. It's also very close to my house and a few times a year they have a good sale on riding clothes.
