In my continuing quest to learn about the road bike, I had the day off and took my road bike for a loooooonnnnngggg ride. Now to some of you 25 miles is just child play, but for me that's the longest back and forth I've done so far with my new and improved road bike.

The biggest difference between the road bike and my hybrid is the way I feel after the ride. I actually feel like I've worked out with the C''dale. i feel my heart pumping, a little (well maybe a lot) winded and my avg mph is up from 10.6 to around 15.7 mph.

I guess the specifics of the Trek as far as cardio go is not as hard as the C'dale is. I like the road bike soooooo much better. Boy this was fun today!

I know the feeling.

I had a great ride today. I TT'd myself on this 9.6mile stretch of road, that I would often cruise on, and sometimes time myself on. My previous best was like 35 minutes, but today I got 32:30. I know its kind of a pathetic time, but for me, it feels fast! (first time I really raced myself this year)

I have no idea how much of a factor having my old road bike is. I have no idea if I would pick up 3mph on a new bike, or less than .5mph.

I know what you mean, you end up being disappointed to get off your steed at the end of the ride.

Me and a friend did home to a local town, was 35miles in total, but we stopped in town and had lunch, how my friend did it, i have no idea, he was on a MTB, and a damn heavy one at that, still he enjoyed it, even with nearly throwing up from exhaustion. , to be honest i found it very easy, and could have gone further, with the only hard section being a steep climb with the wind in my face. I got to realise how friendly other riders are, met about 4 other riders, who all said hello, and chatted for a while, youget the sense of being a real group, fantastic, i finally think ive found my sport.

Good too hear from you mate, and i hope you keep it up, 15mph avg is still too fast for me, never mind 18 on the 9.6 stretch, all in good time i say.

I ride an R800 too, but I have the opposite effect when I ride my hybrid. I recently took out my hybrid for a 12 mile ride. First off, it feels way different, the hybrid has a huge gel seat and a shock seat post, very nice. But the bike is so much heavier than my road bike, and the gears are different, so when I was done with the 12 mile ride, my legs felt like I had gone 25 miles on my Cannondale R800. It just takes more energy to move my hybrid, (A Marin Kentwood). Ummm, that's what I think at least.

Dazza, thanks for the kind words. I noticed that you are from N. Ireland. My brother in law was from Waterford and now lives in Cleveland, Ohio.

Ah Waterford, i honestly cant say ive been there before, but i think its near Belfast. Not sure. NI really does kick ass for road and MTB biking. You should holiday over here some time, lots of great views etc.

Boy oh boy do I know this feeling. With a road bike less than half the weight of my previous hardtail, my average speed went up by at least 5km/h for a long ride. I am covering twice the distance too with the new bike on any ride. I just have the energy to go, and go, and keep going. haha. I love the roads and I love my bike. Most of all, I love to ride!
