Those guys were great athletes back then, just as today. For some reason though, I keep expecting the Stuka dive bombers to appear. Too many WWII programs I guess.
People definitely aged different back then, some of those guys look almost like they're in their 50's.

Thread title reminds me of this;
Way back in the 70's there was a 180 meter board track that was set up now and then for 6-day type events. T-shirts and posters were made stating "Iron Men on Board Tracks" promoting the races.

Agreed.
Even as late as 1972 my cycling coach, who was a great fan of Jaques Anquetil, taught us to set our saddles quite high and practice our "ankling," the technique of pushing down on the pedal with the toe at the bottom of the pedal stroke.

Thanks to those who posted the links. I watched them start to finish due to Bobet riding a Stella & my recent overhaul of one. Anyone notice in last few stages of the 53 TDF, it appeared Bobet's Stella (#61) was set-up with a single, rear shift lever, unless my old eyes let me down?? Watched several times & froze frame on close-ups. Don
