Odd tyre size question???

Hi Guys, so I`m working on a Dawes touring bike, popped on some new tyres (700c) and they are very loose - to the point where one pops off the rim when inflated - though 650b is way too small - any ideas what to put on there (700c but just a bit deeper in the rim?

Thanks, Dan

597mm/EA1/26 x 1 1/4" and 590mm/EA3/26 x 1 3/8" are the only sizes I know of between 700c/622mm and 650B/584mm. Sheldon Brown's chart might help: https://www.sheldonbrown.com/harris/tires/#lesscommon

British rims almost always have markings stamped on them. No such luck?

Is the rim a hook rim? If not, some folding might blow off , Tires with a steel bead, i.e. non-folding tires , might fit.

Do the 700c's seem like they fit until they are inflated? If they do, it might be the tires. If not, then Neal's likely right about 597 or 590. Most rims are marked - which is what one should go by if it is present.

Au contraire - I have a bike with Dunlop rims and one is marked 28x1 3/4 WO (front) and the other is marked 28x1 1/2 WO (rear) and the front is a 700c and the rear is a 700(a), 635mm. Granted, my bike is old, 1940s at the newest, so the standards may not have been…standard…but it makes for an interesting discussion.

Pics of the Dawes would help.

If they are close enough that they seem to be mounted but blow off the rim when inflated, they are likely 700C but NON-hook bead, meaning you have to be very careful when inflating, and you probably want to avoid folding tires.
