Japanese Loro Brompton 5-speed hub - anyone heard of this?

https://www.loro.co.jp/bro510set/brompton510.html

Website in Japanese, translation to English a little wonky but serviceable.

I can find precious little info on this hub. Looks intriguing, esp. the 5x2 derailleur option.

My guess, mechanically they did a mix and match of parts, you buy both hubs,
or the 5 speed core & tear them down,

doubt the 5 speed is 28 hole.. But could be..
but maybe more internal swaps can be done and retain the 28 hole hubshell.

try, give it a go?

Approx £311.- labour included. Translation difficult but I would guess labour is cheap in the far east. Why not buy the same hub from SJS or other western supplyer?

Edit: Only found this one today, think i remember a W and a N https://www.sturmey-archer.com/products/hubs/cid/4/id/64 Same hub, 256% . Has been discussed here plus in the Bromptonforums.

In looking at IGH, I have noticed that the 5-speed hubs often sell for more than the 8-speed hubs. you might want to check on prices before buying.

BTW, unlike a lot of people who object to the wide gaps between 1-2 and 7-8 on the SA 8-speed, I consider the hub to really be a Granny+6speed+Overdrive hub, which to me makes a lot of sense.

That is a neat page. Plus they have a wide range of cog pairs ... 12-17 seems to be the widest.

Just mulling over gearing options for my new M3L with this one, but if it's just a mishmash of a couple different hubs, not as interested. Thanks, all!

I run a Schlumpf mountain drive crankset with my M3L, it uses the 3 speeds twice, for 6 ratios, wide range.
Or put on a double chain set and use the greasy finger shifting, unless you get one of the custom FD mount Brackets.

I heard that SA S-RF5 is underrated IGH. It needs more attention to keep happy pedaling. Is it true? I have plan to upgrade my brompton from 3 to 5 speed. I like 5 speed with 1 shifter than 6 speed with 2 shifter and 5 speed with wide ratio is enough for me. Schlumpf idea is the best solution I think, but it's too expensive.

Search the forums to see what peopel say about them. I have an old (two wires) 5 speed hub on my B. Good but a bit sensitive on the adjustment.

After much thinking and reading I have decided to upgrade my sons B to 5 speed, the nine spline hub. I think it is a good solution since 5 is more than 3 and with the same weight. Also options for 10 speed instead of 6.

Used Shelton's gear math engine, found combining the Schlumpf mountain drive, & the current wide range 5,

the lowest in high range, and the highest, in low range, are , overlapping there, almost the same ratio..

54t, [low is 21.6 equivalent]

.... High . Low range

1) 41.7 _ 16.7

2)50.1 _ 20.0

3) 66.8 _ 26.7

4) 89.0 _ 35.6

5) 106.8 _ 42.7
