Identifying Vintage Peugeot bike
Hello!! Trying to work out exactly what model / year this bike I just bought of FB marketplace is. Here's all the specs:
Shifters: stem shifters
Brakes: Mafac "racer" centre pull brakes
Components: Simplex - brand
Rims: Rigida Chrolux
Other: includes a ventolux frame pump (2nd gen) and the mounts for it on the downtube, and an Esge Pletscher kickstand.
Serial number: 2193161 on a metal tag on the bottom bracket. No other serial numbers.
I'm pretty sure it's a mid-70s bike but would love to try and get the exact make and year.

It's almost surely a UO-8 or AO-8. Look at the early 70s catalogs at https://www.bikeboompeugeot.com/Broc...ures%20USA.htm.

there are three spots which may exhibit an easy to read marking:
a) Simplex front gear mech, underside of body
b) Simplex rear gear mech, backside of cage inner plate
c) Rigida Superchromix wheel rims, inside small diamond symbol
your mid-seventies date estimate is plausible as that is the time the stem controls came into use by the manufacturer

I worked at a Nishiki-Peugeot dealership from mid-1972 through 1974.
Peugeot serial numbers are famously inconsistent and unreliable, but 2193161 should indicate 1972 production (7 digits for 1970s), possibly late in the year as a 1973 model (hence the stem shifters). If it has half-chrome forks and quick release wheels, it is a UO-8. Wingnuts and fully painted forks would indicate an AO-8.
