Phoenix group rides
I moved from Spokane, Wa to Phoenix, Az about 6 months ago. In Spokane and in Las Vegas where my company had a training center, I have been on hundreds of group rides advertised in bike shops, on club websites and Facebook. I have organized and lead several rides myself on my old club's website and not once had I ever experienced a complete no-show in a publicly advertised group ride. I just attempted to show up to my 20th group ride since I came here and 14 out of the 20 have been no-shows. I just can't fathom how someone could just not show up knowing that other people are taking the time to tune up their bikes, getting up early and traveling to the starting point only to be stood up. When I posted rides, even if we were in the midst of a white-our blizzard and sub-zero temperatures where it would have been obvious that the ride isn't happening, I would still post on the website that the ride was canceled to notify any hearty souls who might have attempted to ride anyway.
My co-workers here are flaky as hell too. They don't seem to think the fact that they have told everyone they were going to do something, and people are now counting on them to do what they said in any way obligates them to actually follow through.... Am I projecting my isolated experiences onto an entire metropolitan area, or is this lack of dependability actually and element of Phoenician culture? Should I just have backup plans for a solo ride every time I try to do a group ride?
