Bikeforums.net is filtered at work

I started a job at this new place, government lab, I can't access this site at my lunch break or my after hours. It seems my IT depth has decided bikeforums.net poses a security danger. They allow Facebook oddly enough, anyone else has experienced this? any suggestions how to approach IT and beg them to allow bikeforums.net through? Thanks.

I don't think I would "beg" my new bosses to let me look at bike forums at work, even if I were planning on only looking at lunch time. I think you should probably just wait until you get home.

That's ironic - at my work Facebook is blocked, and BF gets through

If your cell phone permits it, make it a wireless hot-spot.

Think of all the bikes you won't buy if you can't access this at work!

How is it blocked? What browser are you using?

At my work some sites are blocked, but only if the browser uses the network proxy. Firefox does not, at least not by default.
Of course, I only check the forums on breaks or maybe while I'm waiting for some process to complete.

As an IT guy, just buy one of your IT guys pizza and beer, get to know him and then just nonchalantly mention, "Hey, I can't browse the bikeforums while I'm at work."

If he's worth his salt, he'll unblock it for you

Are you REALLY recommending the OP bypass workplace firewalls with his cell phone?

Get a new job, it's the only solution.

Seriously, I just use my phone if I feel that I must visit a site. Or I just wait to get home and use some other site as a time waster.

It does bug me that NOBODY blocks Facebook. IMO that should be the FIRST site that gets blocked if they're worried about people wasting time online.

It is more about bandwidth it seems, all forum sites and all spots related sites are automatically are blocked. Facebook and YouTube are not.

This is funny because YouTube is the single largest consumer of bandwidth in our firm. All of the forums sites don't even come close.

If it makes you feel better, you are not alone experiencing this issue- government job + limited/no access at work- one guy isn't even allowed to plug anything in to the USB ports.

Odds are that IE is the browser and the OP doesn't have permission to download/install anything.

More than one guy; DOD has forbidden its employees from using any personal USB devices on government owned computers for at least the last 5 years.

Might work at a small time operation, not at many large government or corporate organizations.

True, and it was a jest. Truth be told, it wouldn't work for me at my firm either. I could lose my job for making exceptions in our policies without approval from above. We're probably a medium sized firm with about 400 employees.

Our software blocks the site on IE as having possible malware, but I can get in fine on Chrome.

Maybe they want you to do the job they are paying you to do and not hang out here on their Dime.?

Maybe you can bring your Own Lap Top to the lunch room?
