Good news, I have skills and tools to take most everything off.

Thinking of a trip to Europe with my vintage tandem.

What did people use prior to S & S couplers?

Anybody holding one or have a case they simply don't use anymore?

There used to be a company called CrateWorks that made corrugated plastic boxes for transporting bikes, including one sized for tandems. I used one for air travel to several destinations and it worked well. The biggest issue was having a vehicle large enough for transportation to and from the airports, and also moving the large box through the airports. For the latter, I fashioned a set of casters that were held to the box by the straps that secured the box closed, and could be easily removed and stowed in a carryon after checking the box at the counter. The CrateWorks box is lighter than some other solutions available at the time, which made it easier to keep the total weight under 70 pounds, which is a key threshold.

We still have the box and casters, etc., but haven’t used it since getting a coupled bike, so I’d be happy to give it away to anyone who wanted to pick it up. But I’m 1000 miles from the PAC NW.

I built a wheeled wooden box for our trips with our Speedster. When we flew last, there was a 30 kilo limit for sports equipment. We made weight by stripping stuff off the bike. A bit of a PITA at the other end but the box and bike survived being thrown a good 10' onto a pile of bikes in Frankfurt, possibly the only survivor, though something on the bike punched a little hole in the case. The inspection at the airport was not a problem.

The problem is what do you do at the other end? We needed an SUV taxi to get us to and from our hotel. We had arranged for them to let us leave the box there while we toured.

Havent used it since we got a couples co-motion.
