Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Since I could not do my usual ride today, I signed up for a Zwift ride. Now I am NOT racing/training, only recreational and want to maintain my fitness. I believe my FTP is something around 2.7 w/Kg. I signed up for a 1 hour ride advertised to be 1.9-2.2W/Kg which is perfectly fine for me.

Somehow the riders and ride leader did not get the memo. In order to stay with the group I was having to maintain about 2.6 w/Kg which was a lot more difficult than I wanted. I stayed with them for 20 minutes and was not enjoying it one bit, so I dropped back to 2W/kg and was hoping to find a grupetto, but after a few minutes I gave up.

At least I got some exercise, but no fun. Phooey.

I've found that group rides/event have a different dynamic than pacer-bot rides.

Sounds like a poorly executed ride with bad leadership. Rides from more established clubs (3R, Evo, DIRT, SZR, ZZRC etc) tend to be better organized, often with the fence feature enabled, so riders who stray to far from the leader get booted. It is frustrating when you want some conversation and smooth pedaling at a predictable pace, and instead it devolves into a race.

I use this website to have visibility into upcoming events:

Pacer bots work too of course, they're just not as social or fun

I think you're correct about the fiberglass structure but I don't know if there was much in the way of crumple zones in 1980. If there was I'm sure the tech was in it's infancy.

True. Crumple zones before that were basically the driver and passengers.

Triple light workout day:

Early AM: strength work. Tested the waters with my exercises before the hernia op. Everything that doesn't directly target my lower abs is ok, nice. Leg lifts etc will still need to wait. Going to resume business as usual and sub those out until I am able.

Lunch: Easy Zwift ride. Allowed myself a hard start in stage 2 and then sat in and didn't take any pulls . Was able to finish 13th/160 on z2/3 watts, nice.

Pre-dinner - gonna do a 15 min jog and see how that goes. I suspect that it will go just fine and that I can resume my weekly jogging regimen.

My lunch ride completed the Tour de Zwift so I unlocked the jersey/shorts kit! Thing is, IDK if I like it more with the groovy bucket hat, or the sporty zwift orange cap. The whole thing is very 60's/70's themed - far out, man.

If you remembered the Tour de Zwift, you weren't really there, man...

Lastly, I take it from the lack of Valentine's day posts that most here at not Hallmark holiday types, myself included. Fortunately for me, Liz isn't, either.

If the child isn't overtly fussy, we may celebrate by going to a local brewpub with a patio for a burger and a beer instead of preparing something lighter and cheaper at home, our usual mode.

Nope. I just checked, and I was right - the stainless panels were attached to a fiberglass "underbody". I'm old enough to remember when both of those came out and got a lot of press in the automotive magazines. Great hope, great hype, great disappointment.

I did an hour or two of heavy yard work this morning and another couple hours of light woodworking this afternoon, and am wiped. Tomorrow morning I plan to mix and pour a small bit of concrete, and maybe go for a ride in the PM. That is, if I am able.
