Looking stupid is way, way, way down the list of things I worry about. Acting stupid, now that's different. So's being stupid.

What I don't like about team jerseys is all the advertising. I don't mind supporting a team, but they're not paying me to advertise for their sponsors, so I don't. I've never understood the concept of paying a company to advertise their name.

Gee. I thought that one of the privileges of being over 50 was not having to worry about looking stupid because nobody else was looking anymore.

Wear whatever you want.

To each his own. Personally, I wouldn't be caught dead in that stuff. But that's just me.
I'm an mtb shorts/Underarmor type of guy.

Couldn't agree more!

Yesterday I was 'in the zone' pedaling up a nice little 5% hill and thinking how lucky I am. As I was approaching a bus stop it got kinda quiet and as I passed, a young man called out "DUUUUDE... your beard is epic!" His friends heartily agreed.

Yup, lucky to be alive!

I,m 62 and pudgy. When I wear my jersey I am completely confident. I can handle the laughing but I have a problem when they laugh AND point...;-)

Best regards,

Mike

PS If I was really self-conscious I wouldn't be wearing on of these "mushroom head" helmets.

I have ordered a new Army team kit and I plan to wear it even if I still have weight to lose. I served and now my son has served two tours in Iraq and my go to Afghanistan. I will wear it with pride. I can’t think of any cyclist I ride with that I believe looks silly kit or not. As far as being able to back it up, if anyone finishes behind me at Bull dog this year I have earned it.

Being from Indiana ( Beech Grove) myself, I must ask you to post a pic sometime of you in the jersey.
Thanks

Very few people will ever have an opinion about what you wear - those who do only care for a few seconds.

Wear what you want (even if it is dorky)!

The guy in the lead is 58, the one in the middle is a youngster in his 40s and the one on the right is 60. I think they look pretty good.

If by team jersey you mean a current pro bike racing team of which the wearer is not a member or otherwise affiliated and if by old you mean over 15 then yes, it looks pretty stupid. About like a grown man in a pro or college football jersey or a NASCAR jacket. But that's just my opinion and if you want to wear one you would be silly not to do it because of what I think.

Who cares? I don't cycle for other people, I do it for myself. I have two Cervelos and I wear the Cervelo Test Team Kit quite often. I don't think anyone is going to mistake me for Carlos Sastre.

You really think it looks stupid? I don't wear team jerseys but that's because they don't fit. I think they look O.K. on the right people and it's a sign of support for the team. It adds to the color of the group.

Like I said, just my opinion, and not one of my more important ones.
Other than the Silence Lotto one, are any of those jerseys pro team jerseys?

As several have implied, by our age we've earned the "right" to appear as we want because we've accumulated dignity without self-consciousness. Let those who worry about pretense and the fleeting opinions of others be self-conscious. Bette Davis said "Getting old ain't for sissies". If you out there riding hard (and that's a relative term), then wear whatever the hell brings you pleasure-- and the confidence you radiate will defuse any criticism from the smug or envious.

I have a neighbor who's disabled and rides a monster trike. Two trips around the block and he's fairly fried...but he's out there rain or shine. I may have to get him a jersey-- he's earned it as much as the local 24 year old criterium ace.

My bike came with a Tour de France maillot jaune replica jersey signed by Carlos Sastre himself. I'm thinking of wearing it this summer to see if anybody thinks I ride for the Cervelo Test Team...

I'm surprised no one has posted the 'true' team jersey here-- the "50+" jersey of this forum!

I personally like wearing jerseys, and have several pro team jerseys with special significance. I rode in the Basque Country of Spain, so I have a Euskatel jersey (I also really like the orange color of it). I got a KELME jersey from a friend, and it is one of my favorites because of the fabric. My daughter's father in law gave me 3 jerseys from Colombia-- all from pro teams there.

But as has been said, to each his own. I rarely ride without a bike-specific jersey because I use the pockets... and t-shirts or underarmour don't have pockets.

I have an "OUCH" team jersey I will occaisionally wear. It is bright and stands out in city traffic. Every now and then someone from an oncoming paceline will shout out an insult but never when I overtake them from behind. Who is the Poser?

Good, understandable posts, BD. I'm of the other opinion though. I've got pro jersey & matching shorts from Discovery and Liquigas.
And I've got brilliant polka dot kit from Kenyon College. It's just about what works, what fits, and staying visible. I've found that pro-cut racing kit fits me better than anything else.

Far left is a La Vie Claire jersey, one of Greg Lemond's teams. I think the Fuji jersey is from an old team back in the early 90s, too. I don't know what the robust gentleman far right is wearing.
