Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Replacing Campy Ergo hoods - any tips?

I've been trying to maneuver the old Ergo hoods off my brifters, to no avail. Is there a trick to doing it without removing the cables? I thought they would slide off, and slide back on. Is installing new ones (using alcohol as Campy suggests) easier if I decide to just cut off the old ones?

These are the older pointy top Record Ergo levers, BTW.

Thanks.

Windex 'em after sitting in the hot sun. And pray. There's nothing 'ergo' about the process.

Will do. With the old ones off, if I heat up the new ones, spray with alcohol, etc, do they slide on and up, without messing with the cables or housings?

It's a beast, even with the levers and cables removed from the bars

Yes they will go on without needing to mess with the cables. I usually just stretch them over and get them on. The rubber is pretty stretchable. You can use the alcohol trick if you need to as well.

I would just try a small amount of water with dishsoap.

heating them helps a lot. use a hairdryer or a heat gun. be careful if you go the heat gun route

slippery stuff doesn't help much because you have to stretch them rather than slide them to get them on.

Thanks, I'll keep that in mind. I figured it would take some muscle to force them into place when I couldn't get the old ones off last night!

Done! I used a heat gun to heat up the old hoods. With a little coaxing, they came right off! I heated up the new ones first, then shoved them on, using my thumb inside the hood to help lift it over the pointy brifter top. Not as bad as I thought, thanks to the heat gun tip!

New bars, hoods, and tape - feels like a new bike! And with the lighter bars and pedals, weighs in at 20.5 pounds.
