I have a Peugot that a fellow wishes to sell me and neither he or I have any idea what the bike might or might not be worth. It has a Simplex rear derailler, a Suntour front derailler, Mafac "racer" brakes, Stonglite double crankset, Stronglite Competition headset, AVA stem and handlebars, Araya 700c 14x622 wheelset. The sticker on the seat tube says Record du Monde as well as "Made in France". Below are some pictures of the bike. Any help in identifying it and it's possible value would be greatly appreciated.

Awesome color. Good looking bike. I wonder why they chose black lugs with that color though....

My guess would be that it was built in a year that all PX-10s got black lugs. Decals look early 70s and that style "tire saver" was popular in the early 70s as well. The computer is old, but still much newer than the bike.

The stem is too high and might break. That would result in an ugly injury.

The bike is worth $400-500. Maybe less or more.

I'm not a fan of Peugeot but I like this one. Not sure if the color helps or hurts the value. I would never pay $400 for it but I'm cheep and wait for extremely good deals. There are lots of people on here that that go nuts over PX-10s that may pay a premium for a green one in that condition.

What we tell you its worth and what the seller wants are 2 different things. I think an offer of $250-300 wouldnt be insulting.

Did a bit of research and based on the decal placement (Reynolds sticker on the seat tube), the frame is somewhere between 1958-1973. As a few of you have noted, it's probably an early 70's model. The owner had taken off the Brooks saddle that came with it. He still has the saddle. It appears to have Nervex model no. 49/162 fork crown with full model no. 49/162 frame lugging. In looking at old catalogues I can't seem to find one offered in that green color, though.

Yes, given that it has a Stronglight 93 crankset, I agree it's from the early 70's.

I've never seen a Peugeot of that vintage in that color, in any model. I hope it fits you well. And do fix the stem. If it's an AVA stem, you owe it to yourself to replace it. They are known for breaking in inopportune ways!

I've seen that color a few times, my master catalog say that all models are available in all colors. PX10 are like Ferraris, people ordered what the team raced. Peugeot raced white PX10 which is why 99% of what you see is white.

+1 $250 ish. That bike has been sitting for a while and it will probably need a complete overhaul. You would have a hard time riding it with the front brake as is.

Well...it's mine now...aired up the tires, lubed the chain, and took for a brief ride... I will take it to the LBS for a good going over and then decide what to do with it. It's a 54cm and too small for me.

I'd buy it from you if you were closer! It's only a tad small for me, and I could ride it fine. In fact, I toured Europe for three months on a 54cm PX10.

The reason this bike came to my attention was due to the fact that I was searching for a beater bike for my daughter to ride around in Portland. She has no driver license or car. My friend said he'd bring in his old Peugeot and let me take a look at it. After posting here and researching elsewhere, I told him that I would be less than honest if I withheld information that would enlighten him as to the possible value of his bike. I was looking to pay somewhere between 50-100.00 max for an old bike and didn't feel it fair to offer him so low a price. Today he came in and told me that someone once helped him when he needed it years ago and he would like to return the favor to me. He said..."I will sell you that bike for $1.00. You can give it to your daughter or you can sell it and buy her something else if you like. Either way, I don't need the money and would like to help out." So, that is how I came to be the owner of this particular bike. What I would really like to do is sell it to someone who would take care of it and ride it. Proceeds from that sale could go toward buying my daughter a more appropriate "less theft attractive" beater...with enough to purchase some illumination, rack, and lock perhaps.

You could resell it in a heartbeat on the Portland CL. Start high and lower the price until it sells.

Now I wish even harder I could buy it. I would adore that bike and would ride it endlessly. But given that you're in California, I expect shipping costs to be prohibitive.

Portland is probably the hottest (highest price) bike market in North America. Start at $800 on portland craigslist and combine the delivery with a visit to your daughter. You might or might not get $800 for it. Just keep it listed for a long time. Time is on your side, since it didn't cost you anything. You should be able to get over $400 for it.
