Notices
Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

I'm surprised your lawn is still growing with the June mini-drought.

Does "opening it up" require him to swerve all over?

He's a mystery.

More gems on training: "What's a good base for training? 250-300 miles per week?"
"Uh, well - that'd be great... but that's a lot. Not too many people can devote that kind of time."
"Really? What's a normal 50 mile training ride? Like 2 hours?"
I had to choke back the laughter on that one.

This was really the first time that I'd caught up with him in a while, so I thought that it'd be, uh, interesting to see where he was with things.

Yeah, I get the feeling that he hasn't raced again since getting ejected OTB. Now he's decided that he's going to concentrate on running with an eye on triathlons next year. BUT, "I'm not going to bother unless I think I can podium, though. I mean, what's the point, otherwise?"

Towards cycling, he's got a very weird perspective. He was relishing the fact that the River Road has been shut down to traffic, saying that it's one of the only places where you can "open it up," and was lamenting that it would eventually be re-opened to vehicular traffic. I've been riding that road for several years and the closure hasn't made a difference for me, so it makes me think that he's sticking to MUPs pretty much exclusively and riding on the road is a big treat for him. At the same time, he seems to have contempt for other MUPpers, "I get a kick out of these guys that pass me, thinking they're going fast, but then I think, 'yeah, let's see what happens when we hit an incline.'" Yes - he fancies himself a climber... in MN.

And then the equipment justification. Yow. He spent a bunch of time telling me about how a carbon bike, or discs, or this or that wasn't worth it. That it would be frustrating because, "it'd be like having a race car as a daily driver and you'd never get to push it to its limits." So very weird.
That sounds like a situation for drinking heavily.

Graduation party yesterday, we had an extra helium "2" but needed a "0" for class of 20. Guess what we used:

Got a serious, "You're getting too skinny" talk today. Left 2600 kcal on the road this morning, but I don't have much desire to eat. Going to grill tuna steaks tonight and I guess I'll have a little pasta and oil on the side or something.

I advise a couple double fudge brownies. Ideally with ice cream.

Can't bring myself to buy that stuff. I'll have to settle for full-fat Greek yogurt, Medjool dates, and half a bar of 70% cacao chocolate. And I'll have to wait until after dinner. No appetite right now.

I wear the socks the team orders. Or the club. Sometimes I mix and match the club socks with the team kit. I'm all about being a rebel.

I do have some Morgul Bismark socks I received when I won that road race, but I generally save those for special occasions.

I don't wear deck shoes when there's a chance of getting seriously wet. Leather moccasins are a very poor choice for those conditions. It's athletic-type boat shoes, which don't stretch when wet, stay on your feet, and dry quickly, Keen sandals with the closed toe, or boots. I also have a few pairs of breathable, waterproof, socks, which are pretty nice.
