Resurrecting this thread. I had just finished building my Panasonic Kierin frame. Everything was on except for the pedals. I turned the crank to see if the chain line was good, and since my hand was closer to the crankset than if there had been pedals, the tip of my index finger got crushed and punctured, and the nail was completely ripped out and hanging from the chainring.

Minor point. Forum rules. We don't post bloody pictures. Might want to edit and remove or see the moderators do it for you.
Edit: Got bear to the punch.

Least its just a nail, 12yo on my kids' track team nipped the end of a finger off last summer and had to have it reattached. Couldn't ride for over 2 months to make sure the finger wouldn't be damaged trying to hang onto a handlebar while riding. Though I'm sure that still hurts like hell, especially as you discover all the things your nail protects your finger from on a daily basis.

I took my index finger tip off 10+ yrs ago.
I was a newbie, but I wished I had seen Sheldon Browns warning pictures about what I experienced prior to my experience.
They are likely still available and quite gross, but that's a good thing.
