Just wanted to add that I recently came into a '82 Specialized Sequoia, and in looking for info on it via the Classic Rendezvous and other lists, learned from folks that were with Specialized at the time that Miki built some of Specialized bikes back then, including mine. The serial number is shown in the photo attached.



Hope that comes through. If not, the number is M2D03667. The 0 is not 100% sure... it looks like an incompletely stamped 0 but maybe not???

Are you sure it's Miki and not Merida?. Does your bicycle have a country of origin decal.

According to Jim Merz who was with Specialized in the 80s, and designed the next generation of their bikes, it's a Miki. Specialized didn't move any production to Taiwan until later, so it's not a Merida.

These three are Japan made Raleigh bikes.

The first one was purchased by my wife new in 1981. The other two are recent acquisitions.

I believe these were made by Panasonic (National), hence the first digit as "N". I believe the second number indicates year made.

I recently purchased a vintage Miyata Bike but would like to know the year and model. It's white with black lettering. I have the serial number but I'm not completely positive on the first letter. It's NS90 905713. But the first letter could also be an O. It has Shimano 600 gears, brakes and pedals. On the cross bar it has SplineTripleButted by the seat. and on the crossbar by the handlebars it has 414 in green and white. And CRMO on the forks. Can you help me identify the year and model please? Any help would be appreciated. Thanks

Brady30, this one is easy, as the Miyata 414 was a one year only model - 1990. It sounds like yours has been modified, as these were catalogued as coming with SunTour Blaze components. I would have expected the serial number to start with an 'S'.

Brady 30, FYI, the Miyata 414 was 10th in a line of 12 road bicycles. The original MSRP was $380 US. The original Blaze components were SunTour's 2nd from the bottom of the line road group at the time. The 414 would be considered a sports bicycle, on the cusp of entry level and mid-range. It was geared like an entry level recreational/touring model but had slightly more aggressive geometry, though not as aggressive as a racing model. I'd appreciate it if you double check on the serial number. My database has several other Miyata STB models from 1990 and they all follow the standard format. TIA.

This is from a late 80's Taiwan made Raleigh Pursuit, just finished converting this into a single cog 2-speed.

Maybe you all know this but here at vintage-trek.com is a lot of information about dating components, many of which are Asian. (Information, and/or misinformation. I have no idea, though I'm sure it's all well-intentioned.

Incidentally, I have a Suntour front derailleur that looks newish by Suntour standards and is stamped "JD". The "J" takes it just off the scale explained in that web page, but by extrapolation it would be 1993, which seems reasonable to me. (Suntour's history is rather confusing.)

I'm a newb to this forum, so forgive me if I ask something that's been asked previously. I have a question based on your info though. I have a white & black marbled (similiar to spider web paint) Univega Alpina Uno, the serial number is M9A11556. How can I determine the year of manufacture? Pics included with components.

I'll leave the deciphering to the more knowledgeable people here, but judging by the components and paint job, that's most likely a 90's era bike.

The Univega Alpina Uno in post #46 is a 1989 model. Given the era,it was most likely manufactured by Merida of Taiwan, but a similar format was used by Miki of Japan. Check for a country of origin decal, to be certain.
