I'm also about to test another set up by using the Vittoria cleats by bolting one side of the SPD slot and one bolt from the side cleats.
Ok, so circling back to report on protective soles added to the Republics, again, what was I waiting for, checked in with the shoe guy and he said "no problem, they'll be done tomorrow, $40" Its been a few weeks, plenty of rides they work great and are holding up just fine.

By proper, if you mean what came with the bike, I can’t help, but it you want somewhat period correct this is what I put on my Champione del Mondo. MKS toe clips with Zefal Black leather Christophe straps, both easily found on eBay.
You probably want the medium clips, mine are the deep XLs so I can wear just about any shoe.
I need to start looking at the dates on these threads before I reply, I’m sure you’ve found something by now
Tim

No worries, probably my bad for dredging this up but wanted to reboot it with the new protective soles. One thing about them is the traction is very good, not much tread but the compound works excellent, wet slick concrete and all else. Been a fan for a long time, started putting them on my cowboy boots that I wear for dress many years ago. The pair I have are 25 years old and still look almost brand new, these keep everything in line and work great on the Republics.

I wear size 9 Giro Rumble shoes and prefer fairly large toecilps. I have big plastic toecilps on my mountain bike, which is my errand runabout, on which I need quick entry/exit for frequent stops and fast starts in traffic.
