The wife and I went through that phase, at its peak she had I believe 17? And I had about 15. After a couple years it occurred to us that about 4 of them were seeing any consistent use so the rest of them were let go. No regrets.

I’ve never really bought into the “N + 1” mentality. Currently I only have two bikes; an older hybrid and a newer road bike. The hybrid only gets ridden when the road bike is in the shop.
I guess if I wanted to ride trails I might consider a good MTB, too.
But, honestly, I really only want to ride my ‘22 Trek Domane SL5.

I wonder if this applies.
I bought my son a beater to ride to and from classes some time ago. I don’t think he used it much for that purpose … I think it sat outside and rusted for the most part.
So I’m gonna clean it up. Rattle can it into a new color (Celeste?) change out the cables (maybe the V-brakes, which suck), throw it back together, and I’ll have a perfect bike for riding the short distance to the beach and back.
I figure if I make it look crappy enough, it might be less likely to get stolen.
Oy … haven’t dealt with a taper crank or a freewheel in a long time!

I got bitten with the n+1 bug when I first started visiting this site after wanting to learn more about my vintage 80's Peugeot and how to fix it up. Suddenly, I needed more bikes but then bam! - the pandemic hit and it was impossible to find a nice bike at a good deal but managed to acquire a few which I still have today.
A few years later and I'm wondering if I have too many bikes as my priorities change. Riding in the built-up urban area that I live in is becoming less fun as more houses go up, more people move into the area and bring 1-3 cars and the road riding is not pleasant anymore.
A decent gravel or mountain bike ride is about a 1 hour drive away so that eliminates any spontaneous before or after work rides.
Also discovered that maintaining multiple bikes is a lot of work! Always a chain to wash and re oil, new tires and brake pads, handlebar tape and the list goes on. I do like looking at them though and totally into browsing marketplace to see what's out there or scanning through the bike porn on Pinterest. Will not be buying a new bike any time soon though and will probably part out with 1 or 2 of them before the winter.
