Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Why do I want new wheels?

I have older sets of Shimano Dura Ace, and Kyserium Elites, along with a beater set of Mavics and Velocitiy.

My lightest set are 1700 or so grams. I keep seeing Vuelta wheelsets at Nashbar that are 1500 grams, and really reasonably priced.

I think I have a shopping problem.

Nah...if want it, and can afford it, it's not a problem.

I bought new wheels this time last year...shaved 500g...

so 1/2 pound roughly… depending on current bike weight probably not a big deal.

I'm not even sure it's about the half-pound. It's more about buying something that seems like a good value.

That's something my would would do with a new set of shoes she likes, but doesn't need!

Really and truly, no offense intended, but you need to brush up. 500g is a half kilogram is about 1.1 lb.

He was referring to the 200g difference between the 1700g and 1500g wheelsets mentioned in the OP.

So roughly a half a pound.

Unfortunate juxtaposition of posts. Maybe they crossed in the ether. Sorry.

OP, depending upon your weight, it may not be too hard to SAFELY get down to less than 1,300 g on low profile aluminum rims. My wheels are all around 1,270 g. And not expensive either. I can build them for about $350 or less.

What's your weight, rob?

Also, xr200s to Taiwan hubs and Lasers?

Pushing the high end at about 165 lb. But I redo the wheels so often for one reason or another, I don't worry about durability. I would inform someone else to think about it a little bit more if they wanted to be more bullet proof.

Yep on the build except the spokes are Revolutions. 20/24. Some pairs of wheels were even built with the discontinued 1.8/1.5/1.8 Revolutions instead of the newer 2.0/1.5/20 version. Wheels were built before Brandon (BHS) started carrying spokes, but in future I would likely get Lasers from him. So far no problems, and since using the Park tensiometer, never need to retrue.

I'm assuming you are talking about the Vuelta Cora Lites. They were my main wheelset for about two years so. They are probably the best bargain in lightweight wheels ever. The hubs are also just fantastic and spins forever.

I just wish they made the rims a bit wider (They are only 19mm, which is a bit lame). They would be perfect then.

Hey, you're not committing criminal activities. As long as you have the disposable income, who cares what you buy? If you like them, get them, you don't need anyone's approval.

There's a musician's term known as GAS: Gear Acquisition Syndrome.

Personally, I don't notice 200g making much of a difference. And if I had some nice DA wheels I would ride them in favor of $400 Vueltas regardless of weight.

That doesn't mean I would tell you not to get more wheels, I just wouldn't do it for 200 grams. A wider rim? Sure. Some tubulars for racing? Yes. Something deep because I a compete in a way that aero really matters? Absolutely.

I'd be looking for wide rims, not more narrow ones.

In that case… what are you waiting for… My wife's bike had DT Axis 3.0.. got Roval CLX40's and dropped major weight.

Really? I have the same wheels and had no idea of the weight. Everyone complains about them, but I haven't had any issues after 2k miles.

I have been eying some flo 30s, though.

When you guys mention "wider" rims, are you referring to the width (measuring from one brake-surface to the other)?

The rim width usually refers to the inner rim width, not the outer as you are describing. A wider rim (around 23-25mm is the new trend) is more aero because the tire (assuming 23mm or 25mm) will form a flatter transition with the rim. A wider rim is also supposedly more comfortable and corners better.

Older style rims are usually 18-19mm wide.

What with the tires and tubes? That's not fair.

I agree...

My bike stock was about high 17lbs (17.7, 17.8)...I shaved 450g (I know, I said 500, I re-checked my math). So, just under a lb for $600...I can't complain too much.

In the end....I still need to bust my ass more for this upcoming summer and my climbing sessions.
