Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Well, pretty much everyone that owns them loves them so since more people on this particular website ride Cannondale more than Specialized you'll probably be swayed in that direction. They're both similiar, pick which ever paint job you like best or get the cheapest. I went with the Tarmac.

Rode them both,Enjoyed the Cdale Evo much more. Stiffer, yet more comfortable. Has a nice muted ride that just wants to launch you forward. BUT, they are both great bikes. Just get the one you are drawn to most. You wont go wrong with either, unless you go with the SL4

Get the one you like more after riding. Also, if your LBS carries one or the other, go for that one.

If its one of the new Tarmacs, I could not bring myself to love such heinous, disgusting pain design.

I love my SL4 Tarmac. I would suggest riding both and seeing which is better geometry wise.

OK, what process did you undergo to get down to these two bikes? That might help decide.

Which group? I chose the EVO because of price. The Tarmac was $3800 and EVO $3250. Same group and same level cockpit/wheelsets. There was no way I could throw away over $500.

When it comes down to it, spending $500 on a bike you like is very little considering the thousands of miles you'll put on it.

They are both super sweet top-of-the-line frames, but they do have slightly different geometries. Ride them both and see which you are more comfortable on. Or, pick whichever one comes with a better paint job.

You really can't go wrong.

They are both great bikes. Didn't feel much difference. Go for price and/or looks

Evo, without question. Had mine for over 2 years now and have ridden the wheels off of it. Rode them all first, walked away with the Evo.

Are Cdale's road bikes often like this cause I test rode 2 Synapses this year and both were the most muted bikes I ever rode.

The synapse is of course designed to be muted as an endurance ride

I'd go this way. I ended up riding a giant TCR because bang for the buck is the best bike out there . SS second, tarmac not so much. I'd go Tarmac because it is what fits me best, but if the SS were to fit me better I'd go SS. If fit was not and issue I'd look at the SS for the price. It is also stiffer and lighter than the Tarmac by a marginal amount but still is.

Price - SS is 500 bucks less so
Comfort - Up to you
Performance - SS by a very very slight margin
Looks - up to you

So it all comes down to this: if the comfort (fit) and looks of the Tarmac are way over the SS for you then that it is. Otherwise SS would be the obvious choice.

Lets make it even easier... Multiply the number for each categorie and each bike times the priority factor

Price: Priority Factor = .75
*Tarmac - 7/10
*SS - 9/10

Comfort / fit - PF = 1
* Tarmac - ?/10
* SS - ?/10

Performance (weight, stiff etc.) PF= .6
* Tarmac - 9/10
* SS - 9.5/10

Looks PF = .3
* Tarmac - ?/10
* SS - ?/10

Example

Tarmac = (7*.75)+(9*1)+(9*.6)+(6*.3) = 21.45
SS = (9*.75)+(6*1)+(9.5*.6)+(8*.3) = 20.85

And the giant so you can see how i deducted this one.
Giant TCR = (10*.75)+(9.5*1)+(9.5*.6)+(4*.3) = 23.9

Tarmac Wins. Feel free to play around with priority factors

I know this is lame... but I like it!

The Evo is only less expensive in some models. Tarmac is less expensive in others. Consider Tarmac Comp with Ultagra Di2 at $4,200 vs. $4,870 for the Evo Ultegra Di 2.

Or the Tarmac S-Works Red at $8,500 with hydraulic levers and brakes (more expensive than cable) vs. Evo Hi-Mod Team at $9,750. The Sworks would be a huge bargain by comparison.

The example I gave was apples to apples regarding components and other similar level items stock on those bikes. I couldn't find the $500 difference other than Spec just wanted/needed to charge more.

You comparison is a bit different. The EVO has a much higher valued crank and brake set. The saddle is also more costly. So that could be reason for the price difference.

But looking at Spec and Cannondale road bikes, my example gave no discerning difference for the mark up on the Tarmac....your example does.

I didn't look st other bikes between the two makers, but maybe there is a better example?
