Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Ugh. Metric with the Tri-geek-in-training today. Of course, I had a horrible night of sleep (baby, mostly, but also wheels turning on a route option that was sent to me late last night) and I woke feeling a tired, a little achy and slightly stuffy. Good thing it's only a metric with the tri-geek-in-training or I might be in trouble.

Somehow I don't believe that. I won't ask you to prove it though. It was one of those things that made me flinch when I was writing it, wondering if this was the right crowd. Then I remembered our fearless leader.

That's the thing. She very well may, but then will ride it off in a small matter of time.

There are few places where one can share their passion with one of their hero's in life. There was a certain amount of awe in my silly hypoxic state, as I watched her motor away.

Well, I'm laid up. Monday I hurt my lower back while building a rack for a customer, and then was messed up good for days. Then Thurs was tolerable, and Friday was actually fine, so I was making all sorts of plans to catch up riding, etc... and then Sat morning it went out again, and today I can barely stand/walk. This sucks.

So I got no ride reports or anything. Kudus to all y'all, though.

That sounds like all kinds of no fun. Take care of yourself - the bike will still be there when you're ready.

Well, I got in my double metric half, but it was solo - friend had to reschedule. I headed out in to a headwind and feeling kinda crummy, so I wasn't sure if I'd do the full route or if I'd cut it short. At the last second, I decided to stay the course. Glad I did - it's always nice to turn around expecting your headwind to turn in to a tail wind and then having it actually happen.

Oh, and I completed the ride on only a small bowl of oatmeal, a banana, and a Pearson's Nut Roll (and some water, obv) - does this mean I'm a fat-adapted machine, now? I mean, I realize that I consumed the cycling holy trinity of food fuel, but still.

I'm sorry to hear.

Been there a few times.

Rest and don't try to stretch it yet.

Sounds work related, which totally sucks. They shouldn't have you building racks.

No choice on that last one. Good help is hard to find. Had to have a talk with my new assistant guy about falling asleep on the job Friday... ugh.

This race is just one of those things I would love to do well on, but just turns into a fight with myself. I was wondering what would happen to my drop bag if I didn't make it up to fetch it, just stuff like that. I took 9 minutes off my best, and I plan on taking that much or more off next year.

For the third time recently I tried to set up a ride with 24-hour rider. This time he was sick. Will it happen?

I ended up taking a nap this afternoon instead. So it goes.

That reminds me--last Wednesday I did a gravel cycling adventure. Well, a couple hundred feet.

There's a sunflower field near the river that I've never seen before. So, being the true road cyclist I decided to journey via bicycle.

This is what I saw.

It was late evening and the sunflowers were past peak. Still, I think I could have seen more blooms if I wondered down the pathway (there were other people doing the same). But it was too late to explore.

At sunset I was ~9 miles away from home and I don't have a front light. Oops. #CyclingAdventures
