my new 58 Raleigh Superbe "club"
This one is sweet because it's almost complete...needs grips and a lens in the reflector.
'58 SW, '58 GH6 dyno, EA1 rims, small SA Sports lamp (have the rear & wring), chrome fork tips, lamp bracket, front fork lock, Raleigh kickstand, Brooks B15 standard. The SW hub is smooth and quiet...works well. Serial #55033 RC
It's the first 50's Raleigh I've seen with chrome mudguards. They seem original, the white tail is a separate plate attached to the underlying chrome.
It's an oddity. I can't find any Raleigh with locking fork and lamp bracket in catalogues. Now I've found 2 of them in Canada but they have right fork lamp brackets as if they are made for the British market. Both with drop bars and 26 x 1 1/4" wheelsets.

Very nice looking bike Clubman.
Can you post a few more detailed pics of the fork mounted lamp & bracket? I want to do something similar
to my Raleigh Sports path racer.

Sweet! I'm surprised to see those EA 1 wheels as I would have thought Raleigh transitioned all of their road bikes to 27" by that point. Guess not in the Canadian market!

Your SW hub works well--you're one of the lucky ones. A good one is a prize.

Wonderful bike. I'm not sure I'd want to ride it much on a sunny day, but still a sweet setup.

Beautiful bike.
Two questions, are the seat stays tapered and does this frame have a chaincase lug? Just curious.

Several years ago I bought the first of these Superbes (partial) in a Goodwill thrift store in Toronto and later posted the description on Oldroads. Recently, this second example was found by a collector who googled it, found my description and contacted me in Nova Scotia. Turns out he lives locally and he's into old CCM's so I traded him a minty 30's mens roadster for the Superbe. Perfect. Delivered to my door.
These entry and mid level "club" bikes seem to find me, hence my moniker. My collection is modest and inexpensive but it has a few conversation pieces.
Yes it has the chaincase lug. The seat stays look no different than any other Sports frame of the period. Tapered caps at the top.

c'man, thanks for the info.
I ask about the seat stays because the stays on my '55(?) Sports/Superbe frame taper from 15mm down to 12mm whereas all my other Raleigh Sport variants from the early 1962 to 1970 have 15mm straight stays.
Just wondering when the change was made.

It was Raleigh's top of the line model. Made with a light, mild steel. It holds its own against more expensive bikes made with advanced steel tubing today.

great looking bike. I have a question regarding clubmans. is 'Clubman' simply a name or was the name intentional to market these bikes towards riders who belonged to a club?

Sheldon says: "The poorer, less performance-oriented club members would ride sports bicycles,"
This bike is really a tarted up Sports. Tips the scale over 35 lbs with the dyno, steel fenders...steel everything!
I'd like to take the twin frame (The serial numbers differ by 12) and restore it with some vintage alloy parts and see how much weight can be shaved off. Maybe for next years Velo Cheapo.

Sheldon says: "Club bicycles were the elite, high-performance machines of their time and place. They were named for the fact that they were the style of bicycle popular with members of the many active cycling clubs. The poorer, less performance-oriented club members would ride sports bicycles, but the more hard-core 'clubmen' would have true club machines."

EBay should of course be a last resort, especially since expected prices (if not realized process) have gone up lately.

Nice to see this thread bumped. That is a neat bike. BTW: Anyone know what make brake levers are on the OP pics?
Clubmans - From what I understood is defined as a dressed road racer. For MOT regulations, they had fenders (with required white section on the rear) and bell. The same bike may have been ridden to a sanctioned race event and entered. They would carry a spare set of race wheels mounted to brackets on the fork lug / axle and leather ties draped on the handlebars. Fenders would be stripped, a large bag carried tools or a change of cloths, etc..
