Winter project: Japanese market Nishiki Pro
ere is an interesting bike I picked up while living in Japan, a 10 speed chrome Kawamura Nishiki. Like many early Japanese road bikes I saw there the bike had a hodgepodge of parts; in order to keep on rolling Japanese racers back then would upgrade components to whatever worked best or was available.
I plan on doing a full Shimano 600 group set and probably relacing the hubs on clincher rims.
- Kawamura Nishiki frame, headset, KMF Nishiki drops. 0.8-0.5-0.8 tubing
- 5 speed Shimano arabesque hubs on super champion tubular rims.
- Arabesque rear derailleur and down tube shifter.
- Shimano 60 front derailleur (first generation 600?).
- Sugino super mighty 52/42 drillium crank with 165mm cranks. That size is actually common in Japan.
- Dia Compe G brake levers.
- Nitro Duralum-n14s-4b, Exage brake levers.
- Unknown unmarked stem. Pretty, with the bottom round plug instead of the standard wedge.
- Shimano 105 pedals.
I plan on doing a full Shimano 600 group set and probably relacing the hubs on clincher rims.

As far as the rebuild, I understand the goal of having a full component group of a single model. It makes maintaining the bike easier and probably looks better. But for this bike, and any other bike that has been used , the rebuild loses a bit of history. The Japanese racers were not the only ones that used the parts that they could get as spares. Every racer that I knew here in the US had a mix of parts. Sometimes it was because a new better item came out, sometimes it was because the broken part could not be located. The changes tell a story. I have a bike with non original bars, replaced after a crash with what I could get. There’s something to preserving what history serves up.
On a less philosophical note, thanks for editing your photos so they are not repeated in the post. We all ought to try to do that. It makes reading the posts so much easier and faster.

BTW, thank you; there is little that is more infuriating than seeing a topic with the same photos reposted over and over again, mostly because folks hit "Reply" without sensible editing before "Send".Oh -- and interesting project!

the second character "7" = 1977 the year of frame manufacture.
the third character "3" = March the month of frame manufacture.
