Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

I'm using old Shimano clamps (bolt is part of the clamp, like you describe) with Suntour Superbe levers. It worked really well for me to separate the clamp and lever. However, I also have a couple of different 8mm socket tools that will get the job done easily. Do what works for you, man

Hockey > football...especially in person.

Agree 100% about golf. Even when I was talking that wretched game seriously, I still had a hard time watching it on TV for more than a few holes.

With a million channels, you could probably find the 'Paint Drying' channel, if you wanted more excitement.

I don't watch any televised sports anymore. When I was younger, I watched teams I liked, knew the names of the players, etc, but it's a whole new crop of people and I can't be bothered to learn their names. Some part of me wants teams from Baltimore or Pittsburgh or SF to win, but I don't care enough to seek out game results.

I remember 20 years back, following the TdF pretty closely, but this year, watching the 5 minute Giro highlights was enough. Probably do the same for the TdF.

WhyFi How tough is it for me to change my headset bearings on the R3? I assume it's as simple as removing the fork and pulling them out or am I crazy? My bearings are shot and need to be replaced, I can let the shop do it when I pick them up but figured I could save myself the time.

Woohoo, I stepped the mast over lunch, after replacing some crusty lines this morning. Fingers crossed for a calm evening so I can hoist the sails.

Yeah, very easy. Don't need a bearing puller or anything - they just fall out.

We belong to a CSA/Cooperative Farm. They have an outdoor wood burning pizza oven that members can use. We are going there this evening. I have to arrive early to start the fire, apparently it has to burn for an hour to 90 minutes to get the hearth of the oven good and hot.

It's supposed to get hot the next couple days. Already 85 at noon, so maybe 90 by peak temps. I guess we'll see what good our attic insulation does!

There's no ratlines to scamper up if the sails get tangled.

The last 12 miles or so of my ride this morning was just a mess.

First was a weird rubbing/grinding noise. Couldn't figure out what it was from the saddle, so I had to stop and look. Turned out that the little retention clip thingie for the FD cable had popped loose and was rubbing in the rear tire.

5 minutes later, as I'm approaching/overtaking a foursome of cyclists, I realize that it's actually three cyclists and one deer. I was on a short stretch of MUP to get up on an interstate bridge over the river, and this deer got mixed up, got on the fenced-in section of MUP and was inadvertantly driven up a caged ramp that went up to the overpass. Poor thing was scared ****less, slipping on the concrete and just grinding its head against the fence as it ran, trying to get away. Eventually, two of the cyclists got ahead of it on the ramp and drove it back down and it ran off.

A couple miles after that, I started getting noise from my drivetrain - it was making that clicking noise of an RD that's needs indexing. Soon it started missing shifts and refusing to even go down to the small half of the cassette. I suspect that I'll see a sight familiar to datlas when I check it out a little later.

I'm sure I can screw it up, especially since this doesn't appear to have a normal compression plug

I will watch the Dodgers and Kings, when I can. I try to watch most of the games of the college softball WCWS tournament, and will sometimes watch a few games during the season. Over the last couple of years, my daughter and I have become big F1 fans, and will watch qualifying as well as the race. Other than the Super Bowl, or an occasional playoff game, I can't recall the last time I watched NFL. I couldn't care less about basketball, at any level.

Watching a full-length road bike race is hard, especially with easy accessibility to daily highlights. I have been watching recent World Cup MTB races, however. The action has been pretty good.

The frame comes with an aluminum plug and epoxy instead of a compression plug. I still haven't put mine in as I haven't committed to a steerer length, yet. Did the builders of your bike actually use that?

That's way more dramatic than the 20 minutes of futzing around with the rear brake on my singlespeed MTB before I even got out the door, trying to figure out why it was locked up. Eventually, something went "pop" and it returned to normal operation. I still have no idea what happened.

After the last ten days or so, 88⁰ felt like sweet relief the other day. Only 90⁰ or so today, too. Even better, though, is that we've gotten back in to the 60s overnight. If it gets in the the mid-90s, we can still get away without running the AC if we pull in a bunch of cool overnight air and then close up the windows by 9am or so.
