I'm trying to fix a Tiagra triple shifter. It had stopped clicking when either paddle was pressed and i was unable to remove the old cable.

I tried thoroughly degreasing, WD40ing and re-lubing before giving up and taking the shifter apart. And i think I've identified the problem being a spring that is no longer in the correct position.

With the shifter in pieces i can manipulate the stopper mechanism to make it shift and click across the full range, but i'm unable to see where the spring is supposed to go. I'm guessing it somehow moves the stopper up or down depending on which way the gears are shifter, thus releasing the cogs to allows the cable to move. But i can only see one side where i can put the spring, and even after reviewing the tech docs and online pictures i can't see where the other side of the spring goes.

Can anyone shed any light on this? Or have i got this spring in the wrong way/wrong place?

You can't rebuild shimano. There's a guy who could do 8 speed stuff, but not the more complicated mechanisms. When it's shot you replace it. If the lube didn't work then you're out of luck.
