My mistake, in my general fury I made a little mental transposition error, since I was thinking of the estimated size of the gear since I was making the exact same calculation at the time....so SORRY!

And I know full well that the rules require one to use a fixed gear on the track. By "track riders sacrificing" I mean the sport of track cycling in general. A little synecdoche.

this isnt apples to apples. road sprints happen after 100+kms so everyone is already going to be drained a bit. road machines are also going to be a bit less efficient than a track bike (losses to deraileur pulleys, chain line, thicker tires etc.) endurance is a much an issue as pure power for a road sprinter.

besides, has Mcewen ever lined up next to a track sprinter on a track, with identical track bikes? not that i know of.

Hey good for McEwen for giving that a go. Shows he's a good sportsman. I wonder how many of those amped-up 200 lb trackies would challenge him on a 200km road stage? Maybe they could put together a whole team of trackies and take on Predictor-Lotto?

Road sprinters tend to be more like track pursuiters-- The "sprint" on the road might be a couple km long at high speed when you include the leadout train. A lot of the australian road sprinters come from pursuit backgrounds.

The longest track events of the pure sprinters are the kilometer and the keirin. In the keirin they're paced up to about 30 mph over about 1.5 km behind a motor, then the motor pulls off and the sprint cuts loose.

There are occasional track sprinters that switch to endurance. Most recently is Marty Nothstein, who switched to crits and 6-day races at the end of his sprint career. He lost a ton of weight (probably almost all muscle) in the process and did pretty well in the 6-days. Gideon Massie was looking pretty good in the endurance events today at ADT, too.

Patrick Sercu and Russell Mockeridge were both World or Olympic Sprint champs and Tour de France finishers. Tom Steels was a kilo specialist before becoming a roadie. Stephen Pate was a world champion in the sprint and has won stages in the Herald Sun Tour in Australia.

Times have move on though - the sprint events have become much more specialised. Bos has said in the past he is considering making the jump from track to road after Beijing. It will be interesting to see how he goes.

posting a time of 10.79 is not "looking pretty good" that time is often posted by masters who have full times jobs and train 2 times a week on the track.

i woul dsay it was below average performance, and he looked kinda depressed as well, no smiles..

You only read half the sentence-- you dropped "...in the endurance events"

The 200 is rarely considered an endurance event.

I don't see a lot of masters posting 10.8's at ADT. Go check the book over at tissottiming.com and see that a 10.73 would get you into the sprint rounds (top 16) at world cup last week. 10.79 is between 21st and 22nd.
