That guy seems like he actively lived his life. It’s unfortunate that he died, but he was smart enough to know he was taking a risk, strong enough to try it, and adventurous enough to do it. Chapeau! Clear skies to another pilot who has gone west.

He certainly did. Plus he was an excellent “instructor/teacher”. He was a pilot instructor and also offered very welcoming advice to new cyclists. He had the knack of providing information in a very helpful way which no one ever seemed offended. There are numerous stories in our local cycling community about what’d he done to help them.

Sorry to hear another one has gone.
BUT, a person dying while doing something that the person enjoyed, while tragic to those around him, is also the way I'd like to go out... Not necessarily the falling part, but... still better than wasting away in a nursing home, or of Cancer, or...
I've beaten Cancer once - ten years ago now... and I count myself lucky.
If I were to die of a heart attack while cycling the Blue Ridge Parkway.... At my age, and with my family health history, I'd count that as a good thing!

I was thinking the exact thing on my last bikepacking trip in the mountains a couple weeks ago; Though cancer may get me in the end; if I was to pass up there in the woods doing what I love, listening to the sound of the babbling stream while in harmony with nature and God; there are much worse ways to go.
I am very sorry for the loss of a good friend; just from his wide smile I could tell he was one heck of a great guy
