First Vintage Purchase! Cilo Sport 105
Hey All,
I've been searching for a long time to pull the trigger on a vintage road bike. I've come close once or twice but the market in Salt Lake City is elevated, with lots of people thinking they're sitting on gold. Finally, though, patience paid off and I snagged this Cilo Sport 105 for $68.50 ($50 purchase price + $15 gas + $3.50 ATM fee for cash). Not entirely sure of the year, but based on the full Shimano 105 groupset, I'm pretty confident it's between a 1986 and a 1988 (https://www.shimano.com/en/100th/his...sult.php?id=30). It has a Tange 1 frame and Mavic MA40 wheels as well as Ultegra pedals. Oh, and the guy threw in Shimano bike shoes that happen to fit me. For a $50 purchase price, I think I did pretty okay, especially considering the above average condition for the year. There's some quirks like how the guy used electrical tape instead of grip tape on the bars, but that's okay. My LBS is backed up and I'm impatient so I'm not going to get it tuned before its inaugural ride tomorrow, but based on a quick ride around the block, I'm cautiously optimistic. Will update after the ride tomorrow and let y'all know if this dainty little bike can handle a big clydesdale riding it around.

We are truly in a buyers market. I am astounded at the prices I've been seeing now for a while. To get bikes like these at $50. Also like my Clang find Trek 600 for $50. Just picked up a Peugeot PXN-10 for $50. Acquiring has become so easy, that the letting go gets real tough because then of course you are on the flip side.
To the OP, I say - excellent find! I also want to say, that is not normal. You don't find bikes like that for that cheap. That is not the norm.
But, it is. At least on your solid, quality mid-tier bikes. Both scary and exciting, this deflationary vintage bike market is.
Maybe some of y'all have been around longer at this buying/selling game than I have. Has it ever been this skewed in the past? My ceiling for used bikes (except for the 'quest' bikes) was a solid $120. It dropped to about $80 and now is sitting squarely around $60. How much lower can it go?
It's hard to remember sometimes that these bikes were $200, $300, $400 new. And that was back when a dollar was worth 3x what it is today. Just astounding! I need you all to know that means my Huffy would have been nearly $400 in today's money!

That's a good looking bike, and I agree that you got an exceptional deal on it.
If you find that the brake hoods don't clean up to your satisfaction, you can get replacements here: https://www.ebay.com/itm/404419603592 I've had good luck with WD-40, but sometimes it melts the hoods or at least makes them sticky.

Definitely a buyers market. Though the rarity of CV bikes in my area mean they are not as good a bargain as this one. Though I am not seeing many for sale anyhow.

have found that Soft Scrub brand cleanser does an excellent job of removing ground in dirt from rubber and vinyl surfaces with no harm or after effects

I don’t understand this tune up shop thing but nice bike. Like an Ironman Expert with Mavic rims. And take AndyK’s advice and order a pair of those hoods as back ups. Mine arrived a couple days ago — Weird! NOS white hoods that fit the levers of a 35 year old brake set that works marvelously FOR 3 bucks that makes them good as new. Don’t.et the shop replace anything but grease, cables, housing, tires and tubes.
