I beat up on a cat 3 dude on a fancy Cervelo yesterday
So I'm on my daily workout ride, and just before the last climb and descent (5 miles total, 500 feet of up, 500 feet of down), I passed a roadie adjusting something alongside the road. He was riding a Cervelo S2 outfitted with TT bars, in full kit, tan, massive guads, legs glistening from a recent shave. As I passed I greeted him with, "Onward and upward."
Well into my this-side-of-pain workout tempo, about halfway up he passes me. I have no idea if he was tailing me at all for any length of time because for that stretch of road the sun was in front of me, and I had my earphones in. No shadow, and it's next to impossible to hear the sounds of another cyclist behind you when Meatloaf is singing in your ears, know what I mean?
Anyway, he's up ahead of me, not pulling away, so I stay close. Even at that slow (9-10mph) speed, there is some draft benefit, which I noticed when he picked up the tempo and I was able to hang on. Then he kicked it up even more. Game on! With every click of upshifting, I returned same.
It was a tough, fast climb. Once crested, I paused for a drink while he flew ahead. I caught up within a half mile, then we traded lead for a mile. Though a descent, it wasn't very steep, and there were false flat sections, so to maintain any speed above 30 mph, we had to pedal fairly hard. The remaining 1.5 mile includes a half mile of -5% gradient, a sweeping hairpin turn, and the remaining mile at maybe -3%. I was in the front for that remaining section and I gave it my all. Average speed was 35 mph.
At the end was my left hand turnoff, so with 1/4 mile to go I began slow pedaling to catch my breath for the remaining steep hump up my street. I turned to look for oncoming traffic, and to indicate to my riding companion that my turn was coming, and he was nowhere in sight! To turn I had to wait for an opening in traffic, and 15 seconds later he finally went past. My guess is I must have gapped him around the hairpin turn (a turn I know well) and the following 3/4 mile.
I have no idea if he was actually a cat 3 rider, but his legs sure looked it.

That should be your first clue this dude wasn't all that.

Ughhhh....I don't think I've ever described another man in that manner. In fact, I'm certain of it.

Truthfully, I loved putting the hurt on him. This cat nothing in my polyester workout shorts flapping away ahead of him. It was awesome.

Well that was disappointing. Started out like a steamy romance novel and in the end it was just some bike riding.

This has inspired me. I'm going to write a letter to Penthouse about my encounter with this young co-ed last night.
You see she has the condo next to mine...

You're not racing unless you both agree it's a race.

Well Kidd, considering that I'm just an average cat 3, and I know I'm faster than you (), he must be below average if he was a cat 3 too
