Wanted to join this thread and ask a question at the same time as can't find very much info on the bike I have just purchased. I am starting out in steel road biking and have picked up a "Peugeot 2000 Competition" frameset from the late 80s inc forks with Shimano 105 hollowtech chainset and a 105 front deraillure, RSX headset (I think RSX was the original groupset attached to frame), seat post and stem and cinelli bars, NO shifters or barakes or rear deraillure.
Its Columbus THRON which I'm led to believe is similar to 531 for weight?? I hope its a little lighter. Can anyone shed any light on this bike, is it any good or is it pants!! I got it for £60 so not that worried really I'll build it up with decent components and ride/commute her but was after some info and input from you fountains of knowledge..... Regards Jamie

'00 Schwinn Paramount from the Match Cycles handbuilt lineage, lugged Reynolds 853. I kept it in its crate for 5 or 6 years, and then built it up with mostly Ultegra. The stock steel straight-blade threaded fork had little clearance over a 700 x 25 front tire (bits of asphalt could get trapped in the bottom of the steer tube and buzz on the tire!), and the selection of 1" quill stems had dwindled with time, so I killed two birds with one stone by slapping a budget Ritchey carbon fork on there and moving to threadless, using a shimmed 1 1/8" stem.

Since the bike's spent half its life in a box, and generally led a sheltered life, it's still in nice condition. At 17.9 pounds, it's not light by today's standards.




2008-ish Soma Smoothie ES, my daily driver and training bike. Welded Tange Prestige, nothing too special... perfect for just hitting the highway after work. In the summertime, I remove the fenders and slap on some 700 x 25 Conti Grand Prix 4000's to perk it up a little. It doesn't sprint too well, probably due to the long stays, but it fills its intended role well. I shed no tears if this one gets a few chips and dings. It also has just enough clearance under the brakes for some modest-sized CX tires, so I might try it in a couple local CX races next fall.

You got a REYNOLDS 953 and that was in the year 2005?
How much did it cost you? It is supposed to be better (lighter or competitive with) Carbon

I really need to check my genealogy and figure out if we're related...my guess is yes...the question is just how closely. Hopefully close enough for a family discount.

This summer, I built up a Surly Pacer, Ultegra 6600 other than the crank and the front brake (650). I added a set of Velocity Dyads with 32 straight guage spokes on Ultegra Hubs. The Dyads run 24mm wide, so a set of 28mm wide Vittoria Rubino Pros fit perfect and ride perfect as well. The Bar and Seat post are currently (dare I say it) carbon EC70's, but I expect that they'll be changed out over the near future.

I've logged 1800 miles since May and find it a great, stable, comfortable ride.

So, am I in??

Here's my offering: a NOS 92/93 Eddy Merckx MX Leader that I finished building up in January of this year. I actually got a good deal on the frameset by ordering it from the Eddy Merckx distributor in South Africa.





I know the seat looks low, but I'm getting over a hip injury from last year.

I've never ridden MAX tubing but from everything I've read, the MXL is like an M1 Abrams tank that handles like a Merckx. Never sell that thing, ever.
