The decals are under the clear coat, and if you look very closely with a strong light reflecting off of the surface you can see where there is a very slight ridge at the edge of the decals.

This project is beyond beautiful. Can't wait to see the finished product. I'd keep in indoors, over the mantle, when it's not being ridden.

I think it's cool that Richard Schwinn still runs Waterford, and that he had a hand in the restoration. A Schwinn that old being worked on by a Schwinn is nice.

Isn't that where everyone keeps their best bike?

Stan -- congrats again on the stunning frame resto! I'll keep my eyes peeled for any original pieces that you might need.

Looking forward to seeing this on the track!

Best,

Bob

I bet Richard Schwinn was also thrilled to work on a bicycle that was built when his grandfather was handling the family business after taking over from his great grandfather Ignaz Schwinn.

The detailed work on that frame shows that there was a lot of love put into the work.

Richard is a prince of a man; he's the genuine article. His parents made sure he was grounded with a big dose of humility by starting him out working at the factory sweeping floors during his summer vacations.

Oh, and he loves old Paramounts.

I saw a lot of old 'mounts when I was last in Portland... if my pockets had been deeper I would probably own one and keep it there as my PDX ride.

You should race this bike on a track in a real race, even though it won't allow you to compete seriously. It would make a wonderful show.

Indeed. CNC aluminum and chrome metric bolts fall a bit short but man, oh, man what an amazing machine!

Yesterday I documented the geometry of the frame, and there were some surprises.

The first is that the fork rake is 55mm, almost twice what a modern track bike would have. That much rake combined with the HTA of 73.7° results in a 41mm trail. It'll be interesting to see how twitchy the steering is. The STA is a pretty laid back 72.2°, and with my long femur, that should be a good thing. At 450mm, the chain stays are much longer than on a modern track bike. Finally, the 65mm BB drop is bigger than a modern track bike.

I'm really looking forward to riding this bike.

Wow, Stan. You are so diligent in your restores. Bravo. There will always be time to find another stem if you prefer. I wouldn't have the patience to wait either. Build it up and see what it's like.

That is one of the greatest bicycle paint jobs I've seen; pretty spectacular!

Thanks, Justin. Waterford does wonderful restoration work, especially on old Paramounts. Finding original components for less than stratopheric prices is going to be a challenge and will require lots of patience, so doing it this way will get me a perfectly functional bike with quality components now.

It's finished except for a few final touches. The weight is 19.92 pounds as shown, which isn't too bad for a track bike with a seventy year old frame and mostly vintage components. I'm pretty pleased with the way it turned out.

My estimate of the weight was pretty accurate. I guessed 18.67 pounds without pedals.

Very Nice!! With those chain stays & that amount of tire clearance, it would seem more akin to Rivendell than a track bike!

Beautiful bike! I'm not into track bikes but really enjoyed this thread. What's the deal with the exposed bearings in the headset and the hubs posted earlier? Do you pack these with grease or just oil?

Waterproof grease, and lots of it.

I use Phil Wood waterproof grease.
